Timothy Mao-Hwa Po

1915 – 2014

Passed away peacefully on June 8^th in Victoria, at the age of 98 years.  Predeceased by Barbara, his loving wife of 64 years, he is survived by his daughter, Karen (Geok-Seng) Tang of Victoria; his son Ta-Wei (Shelley) of Beaverton, Oregon, four grandchildren, Monica (Nicholas) Althouse, Allan Tang, David Po, and Rosa Po; three great-grandchildren, Marlena, Maelee, and Johannes Althouse; one sister, Yuhua Pu of Montreal, Quebec; and extended family located across Canada, the United States, China, Taiwan, Hong Kong, Indonesia and Switzerland.

Born in Wu-Tsin, Kiangsu Province (present day Changzhou, Jiangsu Province), China, where he spent his childhood, he went on to earn a Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering degree from National Chekiang University (Zhejiang University) in Hangchow (Hangzhou), China in 1937.  He became a civil servant for the Nationalist Government of China and during the Japanese occupation of China, coordinated the shipment of supplies from Haiphong, Vietnam to the unoccupied interior of China.  In recognition of his contributions to the war effort, in 1944, he was awarded a scholarship gifted by Imperial Chemical Industries of Great Britain to the Chinese government.  In 1946, he completed a Master of Science in Metallurgy degree at the University of Birmingham, England.

After marrying in Hong Kong in 1947, he and his wife raised their family in Kaohsiung and Taipei, Taiwan, where he continued his career as a civil servant, ultimately holding positions as Director of the Department of Mining and President of the Mining Research and Service Organization under the Ministry of Economic Affairs.  After retirement, he settled in Victoria in 1980, where he spent his days devoted to his wife, who owned and operated Sayward News on Douglas Street for ten years, and surrounded by his family and friends.

The second youngest of seven children, and born into a long tradition of scholarship and public service, Timothy was a model of humility, diligence, and perseverance.  Through his love, support, and personal example, he continues to inspire each of us to pursue our passions and realize our full potential.

A private memorial will be held on Saturday August 23^rd to coincide with his 100^th Chinese birthday celebration.  Flowers are gratefully declined; tributes, if desired, may be made to the Victoria Hospice and Palliative Care Foundation.
