December 11th, 1916 – January 21st, 2015

On January 21st, 2015, and in her 99th year, Mom journeyed peacefully into God’s care.  Terry was born in Halifax, Nova Scotia, and was one of the last, if not the last, remaining survivors of the Halifax explosion in November, 1917.  As a young girl, she moved to Victoria with her parents, Theresa and George Wragg.  She attended school in Esquimalt and had a career as a bookkeeper before starting a family.  In the 1940s, she and Dad built a home on Harling Point in south Oak Bay where she lived for the remainder of her days.

Mom had a wonderful zest for life.  She loved to travel and made many trips to Europe, particularly England, with her daughters to visit her relatives and friends.  She enjoyed “playing the slots” both at the casino here and in Reno.  She participated in activities at the Monterey Centre and was, until a couple of years ago, a regular member of the Thursday morning sing-along group.  She was a kind-hearted and very giving woman, a supportive mother and a dear friend to many.  She adored all animals, especially dogs.  Mom drove until she was 92 and actively played cards with her friends until she was 95.

Terry was predeceased by her husband, Albert (Jerry) Edge in 1976 and subsequently by her cherished friend, Godfrey McMurchie, in 1992.  She leaves to mourn her passing her two daughters, Maureen Taylor and Kathleen Edge.  She will also be greatly missed by her English cousins, Jean Oakley and Paul des Salles; her lifelong friends, Bea Rowley and Joy Obee; as well as other friends and extended family members.

Maureen and Kathleen would like to thank the home care team, especially Debbie, Angela, Kathleen and Patricia, as well as Dr. Fiona Manning and Andrea Hofmeyr (VIHA).  Without their support, we could not have fulfilled Mom’s wish to remain in our family home.

No service by request.  There will be a celebration of Mom’s life announced at a later date.  In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Victoria SPCA.

“Come to me, all you who are weary and heavy-burdened, and I will give you rest.”

It was serendipitous that I came across this announcement of your Mom’s passing. I was not surprised to see my mother’s name listed as a long and dear friend. I remember your Mother too and more vaguely you two sisters. Your Mother was indeed a kind and generous person, altho’ you may wonder how I know all that – it’s quite simple; but I suppose, a long story as well. When I lived at home and in Victoria later, I knew of your mother’s friendship with my mother; very well. Since I’ve not lived there for more than 40 years; things change. But you may be aware; my mother lives in a care home (she’s 97) and shortly, I will come again to Victoria, to work on the project of 75 years in her home! And there, each time, I am reminded of their friendship; as she kept all of your mother’s cards. It’s special; and they were to each other. May God bless you both.

    Dear Maureen and Kathy,

You two sisters have been a true and admirable team supporting your mom to live at home throughout her frailty and infirmity in the last years of her long and active life. You navigated a difficult journey with kindness, sacrifice and love, enabling your mom was to pass peacefully in familiar surroundings.

The Edge family on Lorne Terrace first came on my radar more than 50 years ago, and it’s been a comfort and a joy to have the continuity of connection over many decades. Now Terry is inevitably gone, changing the picture but leaving solid good memories and her two daughters to sustain presence in the ‘hood.

    Dear Maureen and Kathy,

What an amazing woman your Mom was. And how amazing the two of you are. You both loved and honoured her throughout her life by supporting her dream to travel, and by supporting her wish to live out her life at home, with all the daily care and attention and energy that required. Terry has been very lucky to have you as her daughters.

Be gentle with yourselves as you walk your healing path. Now is the time for some generosity of spirit toward yourselves. Take the time you ned to heal, and know that you are loved and supported by many.

    With love, Linda

    Maureen & Kathleen –
in recent years you gave your mother the great gift of supporting her in every possible way to stay actively involved for as long as she could and then to remain in her own home to the end. The kindness, patience & generosity you have shown in meeting the many challenges along the way has been inspirational. From the Halifax Explosion through 70 years in the Harling Point neighbourhood — your mother had a LOT of history and touched many lives. She will be missed.
