1925 – 2014 

Mike passed away peacefully surrounded by his family on October 27th. He is survived by Helen, his beloved wife of 63 years; daughters, Kendra and Liane and his brother, Stanley (Bette) and was predeceased by sister, Joyce (Joy) Curwen in 2013.

Mike was born in Singapore, immigrated to the North Okanagan and began his education in a one room school house and attended Vernon High School. He served overseas with the Canadian Scottish Regiment and saw military action in WWII in Northwest Europe. Mike graduated from UBC with Honours in Law in 1951 and practiced in the southern interior for 10 years, then as a corporate lawyer in Calgary and in 1968 became President of Interior Forest Labour Relations Association. In 1976, he became Chairman and Deputy Minister, Government Employee Relations Bureau as chief negotiator and administrator. In 1984, he was named Vice Chairman of the Labour Relations Board of BC. He served for two decades as Trustee of the Royal Oak Burial Park and served ten years as President of his Strata organization guiding them through remediation. Mike and Helen were world travellers. He was an ardent golfer and a long standing member of the Victoria Golf Club. He was a member of the Alberta Bar and was recognized for his 60 year membership of the BC Law Society.

The family thanks The Lodge at Broadmead for their compassion and care.  

A private memorial is planned. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Victoria Hospital Foundation.

    Dear Helen, So very sorry to hear of Mike’s death. My main memories of Mike are as a formidable opponent at the bridge table. Always the gentleman, kind and considerate but” no holds barred” when it came to the bridge table.

    My most sincere condolences to you and the girls. Husband and fathers are very special persons in our lives
    and he will be sorely missed by you all.
