1928 – 2014

Max passed away peacefully in his sleep on October 24 at Craigdarroch Care Home, after living with Alzheimer’s for the past 10 years. He leaves Kathleen, his loving wife of 57 years, and his daughters, Jane (husband Fred) and Tracy (husband Stephen), all of whom will miss him tremendously.

Max was born in England and he and Kathleen immigrated to Canada in 1956. They traded the lights of London for the wilds of northern Ontario, following which Max’s career took them to southern Ontario and finally Victoria. Max had a long and respected career in highway engineering, first with the Ontario Ministry of Transportation and then with UMA in Victoria. Max made good friends in his lifetime and was grateful to all of them for their support and love.

The family would like to thank Dr. Alan Cook and the wonderful staff of the Craigdarroch Care Home for the care they took of Max.

Condolences for the family may be offered below.

Our sincere condolences to Kathleen, Jane, Tracy, Fred and Steve for the loss of Max.
We have enjoyed Max and Kathleen’s company since their arrival in Victoria. His passing has generated a lot of happy memories of our foursome outings to Vancouver Island wineries, art shows, and dance performances which were always enhanced by Max’s discerning appraisals–the recollections of which have generated a lot of smiles. At car shows (English cars of course),his encyclopedic knowledge of the history and exceptional awareness of detail made these events all the more enjoyable because of his company. At his suggestion he and I attended a show in the pouring rain. The always dapper Max, under an umbrella, asked ,with humorous disapproval, if my old battered, relict, west coast rain hat was kept for these special occasions.
We shared an appreciation for model cars, boats, and airplanes made all the more enjoyable and informative by Max’s knowledge of the craftsmanship.
We introduced Max and Kathleen to west coast boating and Max made it clear that he preferred boats big enough that they did not tip when he stepped aboard! We cruised to Canadian and American Gulf Islands for winery tours, markets and site- seeing and Max always treated us to lunch and wine. He liked to take the helm and I was glad of his help on board-on one occasion the twin throttle levers had been held in their settings by clothes pins—Max ,never missing a detail, and with wry good humour, complimented on the “high tech” solution to my technical problem.
His well honed intelligence, wit and good humour, was always welcome and we enjoyed his good company.

    To Kathleen, Jane and Tracy,
My heartfelt condolences Kathleen. It has been a rough period for you. Max was a good person with a sense of humour, and I enjoyed his company and his advice at VIHP. He is at rest now.
All the best to you and maybe I will bump into you at the Broadmead Mall one of these days.
    Take care

    Love – Kap

You are all in our prayers here in Calgary as we remember with fondness the few times that we were able to connect with Max before he became sick. He was such a dashing man and so kind and smart. He will be missed by all of you. Take care of yourselves as you learn to say good bye. All our love.

Great to get to know Max over the last three years. Thinking of you Kathleen and family at this time. Max had a great smile and often laughed in his alert moments.

Kathy-my heart goes out to you. It has been such a struggle for you both for so long. We have to believe Max is in a better place now. I keep hoping that’s true for the ones who go before us.

    Much love

    Kathleen and family,

I worked at UMA for a time while Max was there, and I remember him as having a keen intelligence and a tremendous sense of fun. It must have been hellish for you to witness such an intellect being taken over by the demon that is Altzheimer’s. My thought are with you at this grievous time.
