“My name is George Johnson, Johno to my friends. I’ve had a good life, even more than the bible promises. Travelled a good portion of the world. Seen sights most can only Dream About. Seen colors that take your breath away. The Terrace fields of Korea and Japan, the hilltop fortress cities of Peru, and Machu Picchu. My wife Jean has been my support through fifty six years. She has given me two beautiful girls and two great boys, each has caused me pride in their achievements and have in turn given me ten grandkids, complete with three great grandchildren.”

These were the words written by George William “Johno” Johnson. He passed away suddenly but peacefully with a beautiful sailor’s sunrise on Monday morning, June 9th 2014. Johno is predeceased by his parents, George and Edith Johnson.  He is survived by, missed and forever loved by Jean, his wife of 56 years and his four children, Kerry (Ken) Martin, Andrew (Sandi), Sean (Karen) and Sara; his ten grandchildren, Sara Silveira, Cam (Tatiana) Martin,  Kyle Martin , Kellan, Brittany, Teagan, Torrie, Avril, Leah, and Reid Johnson and his three great-grandchildren, Emily, Alex and Liam Martin.  Also missed by his brother, Bob (Betty) Johnson; sister, Carol Acres and sister, Maureen (Barry) Vreeland, as well as a great many nieces and nephews in eastern Canada. His dogs Darby and Lilly will miss him dearly.  Other than his family, Johno’s great love was the sea. Travelling the world as a member of the Royal Canadian Navy for 27 years, he was a proud veteran.  After retiring from the Navy, Johno worked as a highly regarded Prison Guard at the William Head Institution for 13+ years. Johnos retirement years were spent in Jean’s good company, reading, gardening, bird watching and enjoying their beautiful view of the Esquimalt Harbour.  He was very dear to all of his family and even though he lovingly earned the name, “Grumpy” instead of grandpa, his endless stories and boisterous voice will forever remain in our memories and he will forever remain in our hearts.

A Celebration of Life will be held at a later date.  In lieu of flowers, donations are gratefully accepted to Sunset Lodge-3rd Floor (Dementia Unit), 952 Arm St. Victoria BC V9A 4G7.  George’s ashes will be scattered at sea.  Condolences may be offered to the family below.

We purchased George and Jean Johnson’s former home on Obed Avenue 28 years ago, and we thoroughly enjoyed meeting them. I’m very sorry to hear of his passing in 2014. We still reside in their lovely home. Very belated condolences to his friends and family!
