It is with great sadness and loving memories that the family announces that Elsie (Granny) passed away on October 16, 2014. Born on September 3, 1925 in Loverna, Saskatchewan, she was predeceased by her husband, Bob and granddaughter, Kristina.  She leaves behind her children, Kathy (Lorne), Bob (Jan), David (Vivienne) and Marion as well as 13 grandchildren and 7 great-grandchildren.

She served as a wireless radio operator during World War II and graduated as an RN in April 1948 from St. Joseph’s Hospital, working both in Victoria and Duncan Hospitals before and after raising her children.  She and her family lived for forty years in Cobble Hill on a small farm where they had animals and she often put her nursing skills to work with her own sheep as well as helping the neighbors.  Elsie loved to laugh and right up to the end, enjoyed a good joke/story, chocolate and her family – always enjoying her many visitors.  She was a very honest, fun, hardworking, sociable woman who truly enjoyed her whole family.

A special thanks to the wonderful caring staff at Gorge Road Hospital.

A private family celebration will be held at a later date.

Condolences may be offered to the family below.

Just heard today of Elsie’s passing. She was my cousin and we had just connected through my genealogy search. We had kept in touch for the last several years. My deepest condolences to the family.

    Dear cousins

Last night I had a dream about Grandma McKilligan and this led to thoughts of Aunt Elsie and so I looked her up only to find this sad news.
I have many childhood memories of family gatherings in Victoria and Cobble Hill.
I will always have a visual memory of Aunt Elsie.
I hope I am not too late for her memorial service.

    hugs, Betty

My sympathy goes out to Elsie’s family. I worked with Elsie at CDH, we were both on casual call, she was a professional , caring nurse. I admired her a lot and loved working with her. She always spoke of her family with love. I’ve often thought of her when reminiscing of the fun we had at work. The busier we got the faster Elsie walked, I always knew we could handle anything if Elsie was on duty.

So sorry to hear of Elsie’s passing. My sincere condolences to her family.

  • Raimonde Hutchins

I am sending deepest sympathy to the family at this sad time of the passing of their mother. In the years that Elsie lived in Cobble Hill, we were all very close, particularly with the sheep club. Our group of four or sometimes five friends, visits to the dinner and theatre were always so much fun. When she moved to Victoria I lost a dear friend and a daily telephone chat.
    Love to all,
    Rai Hutchins and family

My deepest sympathy to the family. Your Mom was just one of my favourites, always such a caring loving person and told it like it was. I can’t put into words what she meant to me. Heavens doors opened wide on her arrival…her new travels have just begun. Love to all Mary

Condolences to all the Family. Marion was kind enough to send me the sad news…and I am still in shock ! How could my good friend, since we were 12 years old, leave before I have?
We attended Galt Collegiate (G.C.I.) , lived just a few houses apart, Roller -skated and jumped Fire Hydrants constantly. and both were the noisiest Kids in town ! AND have kept in touch for all these years. with much humour.

My Chum, Elsie, was the funniest girl I have ever known. I know that everyone in the Saunders family, little or big, appreciated “Granny” and her great caring!
