David Ramsden died June 23, 2014 after losing a struggle with heart disease.  He was born in Rainham, England in 1949 and immigrated to Canada as a young child where he spent his youth in Newmarket, Ontario.  He leaves behind his wife, Joyce; son, Sam; daughter-in-law, Martina and grandsons, Alessandro and Matteo; son, Ben; daughter-in-law, Egyp and granddaughter, Lina; sister Elaine and nieces, Tracey and Denise and their families.  Joyce’s family in the U.S. and Denmark, along with Marti’s and Egyp’s families in Sardinia and Korea, counted him as one of their own.  David received his B.Sc. from McMaster and his M.Sc. in climatology from UVic.  He worked as a scientific programmer for the Ins. of Ocean Sciences, and the Climate Research Centre, retiring 15 years ago to pursue an avid interest as an online investor.  Dave was a mentor for several traders and administrated an online trading thread for over a decade.  He had a special spot in his heart for his grandchildren, and was a wonderful father and husband.  Friends say that once you met Dave, you could never forget him for his unique brand of humour, candid observations, and exuberant nature.  A heartfelt thank you to Bryan Hardy, TCMP, Drs. Smardon, Swiggums, Antonsen, and cardiac team; Hospice, RJH Cardiac wards, Emergency, CCU, Pacemaker Clinic and Ambulance Services.  Their professional, yet caring attention gave us much comfort.  And our wonderful friends –  you have been my life-line.  An open house celebrating his life will be held at the family home on July 6th, 2014 between 1:00 pm and 5:00 pm.  In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the RJH Foundation or Hospice.  Condolences may be offered to the family below.

    Dear Joyce and family,

It was very sad news and a shock to learn that Dave is no longer with us. Dave was a much appreciated friend in our close-knit group of the graduating class in grade 13 at Newmarket High School. I had been hoping to look him up now that his classmates are moving into retirement. I hope your family and friends may bring comfort and support during this tough year. Sincerely,
    Norma (Mickleburgh)

    Joyce and Family

I am so sorry to hear of Dave’s passing. It was anticipated but not so quickly and thus so hard to prepare for.

Your strength will come from memories of what a great guy he was-the ultimate straight shooter.

  • Greg Holloway

    Dear Joyce, Sam and Ben,
It’s been so many years since the pleasure of working with Dave, sometimes seeing Joyce, and the (then) growing lads (much as my own growing lad back then). Condolences to all of you and best wishes while imagining the growing next generation in Sam’s and Ben’s families. Thank you also for linking the many ways to donate in Dave’s memory; what an appropriate way to think of Dave — Greg

    Joyce and family,

We were so sorry to read of David’s death. While David may have lost a struggle with a disease in his physical heart, it obviously never touched his emotional heart.

I would like to express condolence from the Gage-Cole family. Aaron is in the NWT following his passion as a commercial pilot. He was aware of David’s illness and emailed me to share his concern for the family. he says David was fortunate enough to see Ben graduate. David has been an acquaintance for decades. always a positive word, an uplifting anecdote, a thought for the day. Kerstin and I are both saddened by his passing and our thoughts are with you in this sad time..

What a loss you must all be feeling. Your write up was spot on describing Dave’s “unique brand of humour, candid observations, and exuberant nature”. We loved having him as a neighbour.

Although I never met David, I have been reading his writings on an on-line investment forum for many years, and was always impressed by his common sense, fairness and humanity.

I offer condolences to the family, but his loss is also sincerely felt by the large circle of friends and acquaintances, even extending to cyber space. And that is the true measure of the man.
