September 24, 1949 – January 23, 2014
Passed away tragically following a surgery at Royal Jubilee Hospital. Born in Victoria to Clifford Barlow and Doreen Barlow (nee Plimley). Blythe graduated from Oak Bay High School in 1967. She attended UVic before moving to San Francisco and working for T.V.Guide for 5 years. Upon returning home to Victoria, Blythe began her 30 year career at the Times Colonist newspaper. Blythe was a very experienced world traveller, visiting many exotic locations enjoying the opportunity to ride a camel in Morocco and attending cooking school while exploring Thailand. She really enjoyed great books, good conversation on endless subjects, gardening, cooking great meals and enjoying the company of many fine friends and a very large extended family. Her dear nieces and nephews and many cousins were always a true delight and a pleasure to spend time with. Blythe was a warm and welcoming hostess to all guests visiting her Sooke oceanfront oasis, Eagle Cove Beachfront Guest Suites. Blythe will be forever loved and sadly missed by her partner of 38 years, Des Thompson, daughter Kim, her grandson Chris, and her golden retriever Zeus.

A memorial service will be held on Thursday, January 30th, 2014 at 2:00 p.m. at McCall Bros., Johnson at Vancouver Streets, with reception to follow. Condolences may be offered to the family below.

I was shocked and saddened to read of Blythe’s passing. My memories go back to Arrow Road days as a neighbour of the Barlow and Plimley families and when I looked after the children for a short time at their Arbutus Road home.
Deepest sympathies to Blythe’s family and to her brothers who I also remember.

    Sincerely, Jean (Chaplin) Jenkins

We have many happy memories of free camping in Morocco 34 years ago. Also pleased that we met up with you guys in Canada in 1995, when you gave us a great slide show of our Morocco days. Our thoughts are with you Des, from across the ocean and across the years. With love, Anna and Dick

I’m saddening to hear of Blythe’s passing. I spent many happy hours with Marci playing at their home on Arbutus. Blythe was always there to give her little sister and friend advice on what to do and what not to do. I will always remember her smile and laughter. Blythe invited me to visit her in Sooke, now I wish I had taken time to make that happen. Life is to short. To her family and friends please accept my condolences during this difficult time.

    Sincerely, Dianne Giles

  • Denny Quint (nee Forrest)

I was so sorry to hear of Blythe’s passing. I have such fond memories of her in our childhood and the time when we lived across from each other on Arbutus. We spent many happy days down at Arbutus Cove and playing in the University woods. It was a golden time. My thoughts and sympathies are with you all.

    Sincerely, Denny Quint

I have very fond memories of Blythe and Des sharing their home and cottage with our entire family. Blythes’ contagious smile and warm nature are the things that stick out in my mind the most. I’m very saddened for your loss Des, and to the entire Barlow family!
