May 11, 1922 – September 29, 2015

Stan was predeceased by his wife of over 60 years, Jackie and his son Kip. He was a loving father to Penny (Larry), George (Sue) and Darla (Brett); a proud grandfather to Michael, Ryan, Alicia, Michelle, Sheena (Dan), Evan and Tessa and a caring great-grandfather to Hunter.  Stan was a working man, retiring as a Deputy Assessor for the BC Assessment Authority and a service man, retiring from the Royal Canadian Navy after a 22 year career including WWII and Korean War Peacekeeping.  After many years of living independently, Stan passed away with family by his side in Victoria, BC. He will be sorely missed and remembered as a driven, dedicated and very generous man.

A ‘Celebration of Life’ for friends and family to be arranged.  Condolences may be offered to the family below.

    The Birch Family

My condolences to all. Stan was a very kind and thoughtful man. Dick and I spent some wonderful times with Stan and Jackie. He always opened his home to our family and we enjoyed his hospitality.
My love to all of you.

My deepest condolences on Stan’s passing. Stan and Jackie were both so friendly towards me when I met them while I was working at Fairways. I was lucky enough to keep in touch with Stan for a few years after leaving Fairways. Unfortunately, I lost touch with him in recent years, but he was always in my thoughts. As my adoptive grandfather, I was lucky enough for him to attend my wedding 4 years ago. Stan will be missed.

I am so sorry for your loss. Stan was my former father-in-law, but I still refer to him as “dad” or grandad. I have lots of wonderful memories about this lovely man. He was one of the most generous people I know. Whether it had to do with money, his time, his hospitality or his understanding……..his generosity came shining through. I remember when he saw a great price on a standing rib roast, he’d not only buy one for him and mom (Jackie), he’d also buy one for each of his grown children. Whenever he went to the docks to buy fresh shrimp or crab, he’d always buy some for everyone. And this extended to household items as well. He was continually thinking of his family.

At a family dinner, there was always room for one or two more. No one was ever turned away because “there might not be enough food or room at the table.” Dad (and mom) were extremely hospitable and welcoming. Partying at the Birch’s was lots of fun!

When you visited their home, and had a tour of dad’s gardens, you’d leave with a bag full of tomatoes, flowers and other garden delights.

He was very proud of his children. He would enjoy introducing them, not just by name, but by occupation as well……..but not always at the most convenient time (remember our trip to the Far East?). 🙂

I admired that he proudly attended the Remembrance Day celebrations every year, dressed to the nines, medals and all.

Dad’s passing will have a tremendous affect on everyone who knew him, but his timing allows him and mom to celebrate their wedding anniversary together on October 5. I was proud to be part of the Birch family, and I share in the loss of this wonderful man. God Bless You and may you rest in peace. XO

I have very fond memories of Stan and his wonderful family during one of the best times of my life. I was privileged in sharing their family holiday in Asia. I always felt welcome and comfortable in his presence. He was a very special man. My thoughts and prayers are with the family.
