My mom, Lorna Stansfield had the pleasure of sharing a table in the Elegant Dining Room of The Beacon Hill Villa with Shirley over the last eight months (my dad, Ronald, joining them for the past four months) where they became fast friends. Shirley always had a ready smile for us, and, as she was quite a “collector”, she would share things with Mom, including gifting two throw pillows for her new room to “help spruce up the place”! Mom and I visited her room often and she always greeted us with open arms and would tell us about her photos and treasures and their relevance to her long and happy life. She really loved having her friends visit, even for just a little while. We shall all miss her and will be forever thankful for her special friendship.

I had the pleasure of meeting Shirley a few years ago when I helped her move not once but twice. It was such a pleasure hearing her stories, laughing at her escapades and getting a glimpse into her life. A remarkable woman. I’m so sorry for your loss.

Greg, Ellen and Carolyn: I would like to express my sincere sympathy to you and your families for the loss of your mother, Shirley. I can still vividly recall our move to Chelsea Place a few days before Hallowe’en in 1957. One night a few days later, our family looked out of our back windows to see a huge bonfire burning and fireworks going off. We soon learned that we had moved into a neighborly neighborhood and were quickly welcomed by the families living on Crestview. Dr. Bob always said that Shirley Dowell was the main reason why his practice became so successful. She told everyone they HAD to see the new doctor in Cadboro Bay. And as you know, your mother could be quite forceful and persuasive and people came. The Crestview/Chelsea streets were full of children and we were lucky to have friends both young and old. Sad now that we are losing so many. Love to you all, Pat
