After a short illness, Shirley Adair Capper passed away peacefully on the evening of October 8th 2014, surrounded by family.

Wife of the late John Capper, mother of Beverley (John) and Maureen (Robert and Donald), and Grangran of Meaghan (Iaian), Marc, Julien (Céline), and Olivier, she was predeceased by her sister Nan (Andrew), and survived by her brother Joe (Jill) and many nieces and nephews.

Shirley was born in 1925 and grew up on a fruit farm in St. Catherines Ontario. She moved with her family to England in 1937. During the 2nd World War she worked at Bletchley Park as a decoder (FO Civilian; Air and Jafo sections) where she broke a Japanese code. After the war, she returned to Canada to live in Montreal, later in Stittsville, and most recently in Victoria.

Shirley was an avid reader with a love of the arts, which extended to her refined sense of style, and her talent as an oil painter and seamstress. She had a sharp mind and excelled at bridge and cryptic crosswords. Though usually reserved, Shirley enjoyed telling a good story and was admired for her strength and resilience.

She will be fondly remembered by family and friends and by her friends at Berwick Royal Oak.

Thinking of you, Bev and Maureen – I remember your mom with such fondness, and the picture above is exactly how I picture her in my mind. What a beautiful woman! As sad as it is to lose her, how wonderful that she was able to have plenty of time with you and your children – what a gift to you all. Remembering Shirley, with love.

What a lovely picture of Shirley and “Cap”. Although we have not seen them for a while (probably my Dad’s funeral in 1993) I have fond memories of them as a child when they were with “the gang” (Drennan, Gray, Schmidt, Lorimer, etc) at Lac Marois. She was the classy one with the lovely voice.
As a matter of fact, we now live four doors up from the “Capper house” on the lake.

It feels like a voice from the past–more than 40 years ago we had the pleasure of living opposite the Capper family in Montreal. Many a good evening we spent on the front lawn enjoying good company and Bev was our baby-sitter for many years. John skies today because of Bev’s patient coaching!

It is sad to lose contact and only regain it though an obituary. We now live in Ottawa and we want to send our condolences to Bev and Maureen. You had wonderful parents.

Even though I knew Shirley very little, she was always my favourite customer; with her smiles, warm heart and patience.

Our sincere condolences on the passing of Shirley. She was a lovely lady and will be sorely missed.

My husband and I were neighbours of John and Shirley while they lived in Stittsville; we visited both of them several times in Victoria and dearly loved them both – John for his wit and Shirley for her grace. The two table ladies’ bridge group was a knitting together of family news and support during life changes – some of these ladies have passed on – Joan, Val and now Shirley. We offer our deepest condolence to her children and grandchildren – We were lucky to have known her.
