November 18, 1930 – July 26, 2014

Roy Oswald Byrne passed away in Victoria, B.C., on July 26, 2014, after a long illness. He was born near Welwyn Saskatchewan and raised in Moosomin, Saskatchewan. Roy joined the RCMP in April 1951at the age of 21 and served for 35 years, retiring as OIC North Vancouver Detachment in 1986. He married Olive Faye Cooper in 1955 affectionately known as Bobbie Byrne. Roy’s early career included postings in the interior of B.C. and the northern west coast. From 1958-1971, he served in the RCMP’s Special Branch. Commissioned in 1971, Roy was subsequently posted to Edmonton, Toronto and finally, North Vancouver, where he served from 1981-1986. An avid skier, Roy was a ski patrol director for eight years. Upon retirement, Roy and Bobbie continued to enjoy his lifelong love of boating, which culminated in their “trip of a lifetime” when they sailed the Great Loop in 2006. This circumnavigation of Eastern North America saw Roy and Bobbie travel on a continuous waterway, beginning at Fort Lauderdale, Florida, crossing the Great Lakes, and concluding their trip on the Mississippi River. Roy is survived by his loving wife, Bobbie; daughter Jennifer; granddaughters Cassandra and Madison; great-grandson Sawyer Roy and his father Chris.  Condolences may be offered to the family below.

As a young lad I always looked up to Mr. Byrne. He had integrity and treated me with kindness and respect. I was always impressed when I saw him in full uniform, it added to his mystique and charm. I enjoyed the brief times I had with Roy and I will always have great memories of our times together.
Mrs. Byrne (Bobby) my sincere condolences to you and your family, from me and my family. You have much to be proud and grateful for. May you continue to be lovingly supported by your family and friends.

To Bobby: Our condolences to you and your family. We are sorry to read of Roy’s recent passing on July 26th. We enjoyed working with Roy in Vancouver in the 1960s, and the good times we all had. Roy was well respected and we knew that he would be “moving up the ladder” in his career. He will be missed by the former gang at BH.
