It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Ron MacLeod on Friday, April 25th. He was 84 years old. Born and raised in Victoria, Ronald Bruce MacLeod enjoyed regaling friends with stories of his adventuresome youth with brothers Stu and Don.  Ron enjoyed many sports; he was an avid baseball and soccer player. His focus became golf, which also became a life-long career and passion. Ron was a member of the CPGA and spent his early years playing tours events. However, his greatest love was being the Head Professional at Jasper Park Lodge for 42 years. It allowed him to spend more time with his beloved wife Sonia and children Bradley, Lauren, Arthur and Sharon. His extended family included his “pro-shop boys” who affectionately called him “Bomber.”

Ron is survived by his wife, children, brother Donald MacLeod, son-in-law Robert Hotte and grandson Ryan Hotte. He follows siblings Stuart MacLeod, Lalia Wilkinson and Marguerite Howard.

In lieu of flowers, please make donations in support of brain cancer research or a favorite charity. Ron was an avid supporter of several charities during his lifetime.

Ron was a man full of life, and he enjoyed it immensely. He enjoyed a good cocktail, a hot bowl of soup and joking with his family and friends. He will be missed, but his stories will live on.

A Celebration of Life will be held at the Uplands Golf Club on Saturday, May 31, 2014 at 2:00 pm.

Condolences may be offered to the family below.

My sympathy and condolences to Sonia, Brad, Lauren, Art and Sharon. very sad news to find.

My apologies for losing touch over the years, I was privileged to work for Ron in the early seventies with Jay, John, Buzz, and Joe. Very formative years for me, I learned so much, in that school for wayward boys. To me , Ron was the example of a professional, a mentor, a team leader, an innovative businessman, a husband and a dad.

I admired the attention he paid to his craft, he could play great golf, and he kept those skills, despite the distractions of a successful business.

So I learned some of it, people skills, professionalism, importance of family, all of which has served me well.

    Celebrate this life!
    Sincerely
    Bill Hargreaves

  • Mark Hardy

    Lauren, Sonia, and family:
Though I only met Ron once, and not so long ago, I remember him vividly as a gentleman of humor and grace who loved to laugh. He clearly enjoyed life, food, wine, and most notably other people. The one evening we spent in New York (with Lauren, Sonia, and other dear friends) remains a very fond memory for me. I am so glad I got to know him even a little bit. As new Yorkers might say, he was a mensch. And that is a very good thing indeed.

I am so sorry for your loss and for his absence in your lives now. My thoughts are with you. I know all that you shared over the years will be some comfort in a dark time.

    With love and affection,
    Mark

    To the MacLeod Family,
I have certainly missed Ron since he left Alberta and the Jasper Park Lodge. Ron was a consummate professional and model for all of us associated with the golf business. His quiet demeanor, confidence and class was something we all learned from.
    Thinking of you all,

  • Virginia (Ginny) Jeppesen

I remember Ron in NYC with his uniquely fresh and new views of the sights and events around us. He loved discovery of new places and events, particularly the unusual. When visiting Virginia Ron brought the same excitement of discovery to Thomas Jefferson’s Monticello. I will miss conversations about American history heros with a bright Canadian.

    Remember the joys–
    Ginny

    MacLeods All–
I will especially miss Ron’s good cheer. I never had an exchange with him when he didn’t seem delighted with life and eager to discuss recent observations. I will miss his smart wit and considerable thought about politics, sports and life in general. I will miss longer conversations about his life trajectory, what brought him to sports and injuries that altered his path, and his resilience despite the hurdles. And I will miss the loving banter between him and Sonia. I have enjoyed their support of one another and witnessing the comfortable and comforting love that occurs when you’ve known someone for so long.

Condolences and a wish for tender grieving that brings you to cheerful memories and a sense of gratitude–
    Mitzi

I know that he loved you all dearly. He will be dearly missed by many good friends and family.

Ron is definitely playing under par on the 19th hole right now! My husband knew him from his many years at Jasper Park Lodge. We never failed to smile when being cheered on by him at Cordova Bay. The world is a sadder place without him!
    Kind regards,
    Len and Dallas Chapple

  • Craig Olson

Dear Sonia, Brad, Lauren, Art and Sharon,

Valana and I were so very saddened to hear of Ron’s passing. We recall that wonderful weekend at Whistler all those years ago with great fondness. Ron was such a fantastic player and gentleman! I will never forget the 28 on the back 9 at Uplands featuring a hole in one and the many great rounds we played at Jasper.

There seems to be a theme in a lot of these messages, and that is that Ron really mentored a lot of young people including myself. What great times we all had in Jasper!

You really are a wonderful family and I know that you will cherish his memories as will the rest of us. We will be thinking of you.

    Kindest Regards,

    Craig & Valana Olson

I knew Ron during his time at the Cordova Bay golf course & I so enjoyed talking & joking with him. He was a ball striking marvel. Even late in life he could still challenge par. May God comfort you as you grieve & remember dear Ron. I hadn’t seen him in a couple of years but knowing now that he has passed on saddens me. May your memories of Ron bring smiles & encouragement to all his loved ones.

    Blessings,

Dear Sonia, Brad, Lauren, Art and Sharon:

My deepest sympathies Ron will be truly missed. Bomber was like a second father to me growing up as a teenager in Victoria and working my summers at Jasper Park Lodge as one of “The Pro Shop Boys”. I had 5 incredible summers working for Ron. He was a wonderful human being who had plenty of time to mentor myself and most of his Pro Shop gang. We all walked away from our summer jobs wiser young men thanks to Ron and our experiences working in the Pro Shop.

I truly loved going to work for Ron. One of my happiest moments was when Ron asked me if I would like a summer job working for him at Jasper Park Lodge. You can’t imagine how excited I was a) to have a summer job before I headed off to University and b) to be working in the Golf industry with one of Canada’s best golf professionals. Imagine winters spent in Victoria and Summers in the Rocky Mountains it was a dream.

Ron was my first mentor he was the 1st to teach me retail 101 and he did it so well that I have been teaching it for over 35 years.
I am a better person for have had Ron as part of my life.

Love all the Macleods my heart goes out to you all.

    Love
    David Amon

    To all the MacLeod family:
You have been some of my dearest friends and I carry fantastic memories of our time spent together. I am so sad to hear of the passing of your father. As one of the ‘pro shop boys’ or maybe more correctly, one of the members of the ‘Ron MacLeod school for wayward boys’, I can say that he will be sorely missed. Ron has been a great influence on me and I hope that I carry some of his zest, love of life and laughter, with me.
    Love to you all.

  • Joe Dutton

Dear Sonia, Brad, Lauren, Arthur and Sharon:

It was so sad to learn of Ron’s passing and Sheila and I offer our sincere condolences.

It was a privilege to work for “Bomber” for 7 summers at Jasper. I thought of Ron more like a father figure and mentor rather than a boss during my time in his Pro Shop. There is not a day that goes by that I don’t think back fondly of the times I spent in Ron’s company whether on the golf course, working along side him in his Pro Shop, or enjoying cocktails, dinner and fun evenings.

May your family cherish Ron’s love for life, his exceptional friendly and patient manner and the positive effect he had on the many many people he touched. We are all better off having known Ron and all that he did during his remarkable life!

    Thinking of you all.

    Joe Dutton
