It is with a heavy heart and a huge sense of loss that a good man was taken too early.  Rob Handby was born in Victoria, BC on September 15, 1954, Rob passed away October 11, 2014, with loved ones by his side.  He is survived by his wife Lynn, his daughters Meghan and Kirsten, and son Rob Jr.   Also survived by his mother, Doreen; brothers, Gordon, Ken, Tom, and Dan and 4 grandchildren.  At Rob’s request, there will be no funeral service.  Please feel free to join us to Celebrate Rob’s Life at his home in his beloved garage this Saturday, October 18th, from 2:00pm – 5:00pm.

Rob wore so many ‘hats’.  First, he was proud to be a ‘Lineman’ with BC Hydro for just over 40 years.  That meant he started his apprenticeship when he was the ripe age of 19 years old.  While at Hydro he took on extra responsibilities such as organizing Victoria’s first ‘BC Hydro Rodeo’, cooking up fantastic meals for the boys, and informally hosting the annual Christmas parties in his garage.  It goes without saying Rob was dedicated to his working career and was well known on the island as well as throughout the province.

Second, Rob was an adventurous guy.  He loved to travel.  He touched upon countless vacation hotspots, such as Hawaii, Costa Rica, Mexico, and Cuba.  Rob also travelled to Asia, Europe, and throughout the United States.  In addition to his adventures, Rob had a deep appreciation for nature.  He loved camping, fishing, and hunting.  Rob will be remembered for his delicious homemade smoked/canned salmon, array of proudly fished seafood, and expertly hunted venison.

Next, Rob had hobbies… he liked his cars, his Harley, and his collection of antiques.

Last, but not least, Rob was a family man.  He was dedicated to his family.  He was a devoted husband, loving father, stepfather, grandfather, son, and uncle.  Rob was also known to have adopted many friends as his family throughout his 59 years of life.  It goes without saying that Rob would be the first one to extend a helping hand.  He truly was a “marshmallow” inside his rugged exterior.

May you rest in peace ‘Handby’.  Always remembered, never forgotten, forever in our heart.

Our condolences on your loss of Rob. As is often the way we didn’t get together as much as we should have. But we did have some good laughs and a number of bike rides over the years and we will hold onto those memories. We will see you at the barn.
