Richard Scherr

Richard Scherr

Passed away peacefully with his family at home on January 24, 2010. Born in Allan, Saskatchewan on June 19, 1941. Predeceased by his father, Michael. Survived by his loving wife of 45 years, Pauline (nee Reay); son, Michael (Christine); daughters, Deborah (Ian) Klitsie and Katherine (Tony) Gill; grandchildren, Amanda, Ryan, Brooke and Lexi Scherr and Bryant and Megan Klitsie. Also survived by his mother, Stella; sister, Marlene (Leo) Rieberger; brothers-in-law, Dennis (Bernadette) and Frank (Bernadette) Reay. Dick graduated from St. Louis College in 1959. He then spent 30 years as an accountant with Field & Company before accepting the position of Secretary/Treasurer of Bartle & Gibson and Companies. He was instrumental in the construction of the addition to St. Patrick’s Church and of St. Clare Villa Seniors residence. He was a Knights of Columbus member for over 40 years. Dick loved three things with a passion: his family, his friends and his sports. As a friend he was true and loyal. He was a devoted husband and father always insisting on a family vacation each summer. Parksville and the Sea Edge Motel with the extended family was a favourite of Dick’s. He took an active role in the lives of many nephews and nieces. He played and coached many sports, excelling in baseball and basketball. His true joy in recent years was the time he spent with his grandchildren. He was able to combine his love of sports and family when he became a devoted fan at all the grandkids’ games, rarely missing two in a row.

Prayers will be offered at St. Patrick’s Church on Thursday, January 28 at 7:00 p.m. Funeral Mass will be held at St. Patrick’s Church, 2060 Haultain Street at 12:10 p.m. on Friday, January 29th. Flowers gratefully declined. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Canadian Cancer Society or Victoria Hospice.
