In the early hours of November 23, 2014, Peter Vezza, after being diagnosed with cancer five weeks previously, died at home with dignity and grace. Peter was born in 1931 in Glasgow. He attended St. Conval’s Elementary School and Holyrood Senior Secondary. Peter left school at age 14 to go to work in his father’s barbershop. In 1952 he immigrated to Canada and in 1953 was joined by his fiancé, Elsie. The two were married at St. Andrews Cathedral in Victoria.  He was predeceased by Elsie after 50 years of marriage, his parents, Arnold and Mary (Nee McGlynn) Vezza and his brothers, Arnold and John Vezza. He is survived by his children, Carmela (Paul), Arnold (Lynette) and Louise (Raj); grandchildren, Emily Peele, Olivia Vezza and Quinn and Zane Takhar, close friend, Morag and Dr. Gail Smith. Peter also has family in BC, the U.S. and Scotland. There will never be another Papa’s soup, as nobody can make soup quite like Papa!

Prayers will be offered at 6:00 pm on Friday, December 5, 2014 in McCall Bros. Floral Chapel, Johnson & Vancouver Streets. The Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 12:10 pm on Saturday, December 6, 2014 at St. Patrick’s Parish with a reception to follow in the Lady of Lourdes Hall.  Interment at Royal Oak Burial Park thereafter.  In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Peter’s memory to the MS Society, St. Vincent de Paul or the Saanich Peninsula Hospital Foundation.  Condolences may be offered to the family below.

To all those dear to Peter,

I was privileged and met Mr Peter Vezza once in the summer of 2014. He gave me a hair cut in his basement barber shop – a genuine experience with a remarkable person – an eternal moment shared.

    My sincere condolences.

  • Brad Weber

My condolences to his family and friends.

  • Susan Beckett

I’m so sorry for your loss. I did not know Peter, however, on our many dog walks, Arnie would talk of him often. It sounds like he was a wonderful, energetic man would loved life. I pass on my condolences to you all.

    Carmela, Arnold, Louise and families:
We had the great pleasure of knowing your Dad, I even had the honour to be his “childhood friend” when we performed a play together at St. Patrick Parish’s 100th Anniversary celebration. He was a wonderful character with a ready smile, laugh and story. He loved your Mom and his devotion was a real inspiration. He will be greatly missed. Our hearts are with you.

My condolences to Louise, her siblings and their respective families. It was with sadness I read about the passing of your father. I think I may have met him twice many years ago. With your father leaving us, your family has now lost both parents. As we age, this is a reality but a sadness none the less. Smile as you remember both parents as they live within each of you.

  • Edward & Georgina Camilleri

We are very sorry to know of your loss. Peter was a real gentleman and it was an honour to have known him. Our thoughts and prayers are with you.
    Sincerely,

We were so sad to read of your Father’s passing. He was a cheerful presence at the AppleTree when I would bring Lucille Cownden for brunch after Sunday Mass. Another long time St. Patrick’s member who will be missed. Our thoughts and prayers are with your family.

Carmela, Louise, Arnold, spouses and grandchildren,
How enriched you all were with the love you received from Peter. We always enjoyed his visits and delighted in the twinkle in his eyes, his laugh, and his gentle manner. I’m sure you will miss him immensely, but know that his presence will always be with you. Our thoughts are with you! Warm hugs and much love from Ken and Patty

  • Colin and Jenny

Jenny and I are so sorry to hear that your father has passed. Although we did not know him that well, it was so nice to see him when he would go into the Appletree to have ‘breakfast’. I think it was really because he wanted to see you Louise:) Outside of seeing his beloved wife Elsie I am sure that he is doing the other thing he loved in his life, cutting hair.
