Paul Dupont, cherished father, grandfather and great-grandfather passed away peacefully on February 20, 2014. He was predeceased by his beloved wife, Irene, who passed away on May 5, 2013, his parents, Marie-Anne and Oscar Dupont and brother, Leon Dupont. Paul is survived by his children Diane (Giuseppe) Scaletta and Ken (Bea) Dupont; grandchildren Paulo (Jocelyn) Scaletta, Gina (Laszlo) Safranyik, Michelle (Archie) Vingo, Quinn (Alana) Dupont, Spencer, Preston and Ellie Clapper-Dupont; and great-grandchildren Fabien and Frances Scaletta, Jack and Natalie Safranyik, and Isla Vingo. Paul leaves behind his very good friends Pierre and Pierrette Livernoche and many nieces and nephews.
Paul was born in Russell, Manitoba and lost his mother at ten years of age. He grew up in small towns in the 1930’s and stayed with various relatives so that his father could continue working to support the family. Paul volunteered to serve in the Canadian Forces during WWII from Feb 1942 until Nov 1945 landing in Sicily and continuing through the campaign in Europe. Paul survived many hardships during these formative years and came out of them a kind soul who understood what was truly important in life and made the best of any given situation.
Paul married Irene in 1946 and managed several hotels in Manitoba including one they owned in Pilot Mound. They moved to Victoria in 1970 and enjoyed semi-retirement while managing apartment buildings for Devon Properties for several years. Paul also continued to work as a private contractor doing renovation work for many clients.
Paul was a skilled carpenter and continued creating wonderful projects until he was into his 90s. When names were drawn for giving at Christmas everyone hoped “Grampitz” would draw their name because a beautiful handmade gift was sure to be theirs. He and Irene were a formidable team at work and in family life. Paul was a very courageous man; this was especially evident in the last few months of his life. He was a great storyteller who made friends easily – everyone loved him.
The family would like to thank the staff at The Renaissance Apartments and at Parkwood Court for the care and friendship extended to Paul. Thanks also to the staff on 7 North in the PCC at the Jubilee Hospital for their gentle care during Paul’s acute illness. We also thank Dr. Ken Yvorchuk, Dr. Wayne DeMott and Dr. Ted Rosenberg for the quality care provided to Paul.
A Memorial Mass will be held at St. Joseph the Worker Parish Church at 753 Burnside Rd West on Friday, February 28th at 11:00. A reception and lunch will follow in the Church hall. In lieu of flowers, donations to a charity of your choice would be appreciated.
