Mr. Thanh Xuan Phan died peacefully after a sudden heart attack on July 15, 2016 in Victoria, B.C. He was born on April 5, 1947 in Quang Tri, Vietnam.

Predeceased by his parents, Phien and Sinh Nguyen, and his son Duy, Thanh is survived by his wife, Lieu Nguyen, and 7 children and 11 grandchildren; daughter Van and son-in-law Damien (Faith, Eden, Christabel, Zachary); daughter Vy and son-in-law Albert (Kyle, Angeline, Brandon); son Phong and daughter-in-law Lindsay (Sophia, Henry); son Ken and daughter-in-law Sayako (Eve); son Vincent; daughter Diana and son-in-law Shannon (Wade) and son Daniel. He will be missed also by his brother (Gam) and 3 sisters (Luu, Vang, Hien), as well as other relatives and friends in Canada and Vietnam.

In Vietnam, after leaving the seminary, Thanh settled in Phan Rang, where he met his wife, Lieu. They got married within that year and later immigrated to Canada by way of Port Alberni. They eventually relocated to Victoria to raise their family. Thanh retired from the University of Victoria in 2014. His greatest pleasure was received from spending time with his family. He loved soccer, music (guitar, singing), and do-it-yourself projects. He will be deeply loved, and will be missed but never forgotten.

A Prayer Service will be held at McCall’s Floral Chapel, Johnson at Vancouver Streets, on Friday, July 22, 2016 at 7 p.m. A celebration of Thanh’s life and reception will follow at 8 p.m. The Funeral Service will be at St. Patrick’s Church, 2060 Haultain Street, on Saturday, July 23, 2016 at 10 a.m., followed by a reception.
