Dick passed away on January 25th 2016,  just short of his 99th birthday.  He was born on February 7th, 1917 in Southey, Saskatchewan to Robert and Eleanor Moyer. He lived on the family farm until 1927 when his family moved to Victoria, BC.  Dick was predeceased by his baby sister, Betty Jean; his parents, Robert and Eleanor and his sister, Molly. Dick had two wonderful marriages of 36 years each. He was predeceased by his first wife, Mollie (nee Llewellyn) in 1977.  Mollie was the mother of his three daughters, Ann, Gail (Stephen) and Jane (Chris). In 1979, he married Elizabeth (Betty) Halkett and gained a stepson, Ian (Sandy) who lives in South Australia.  Dick was predeceased by his second wife, Betty, in March 2015. He is survived by his three daughters and stepson; nine grandchildren; eighteen great grandchildren and one great-great-granddaughter.

After graduating from high school, he worked at Moore Whittington lumber mill with his father for a short while. In 1937, he started his career in the C.P.R. Purchasing Department where he worked for forty years.  For three more years, he worked for B.C. Steamships, retiring in 1981. During World War II, Dick served in the Signal Corp of the Canadian Army (Pacific Command).  Dad (Grandpa) was a warm, caring person; he loved us all unconditionally.  He set the bar high and stressed loyalty above all.  He will be greatly missed by all his family, his many friends in the Arion Choir, the church and community of Strawberry Vale, and far beyond.

Thank you, Dad, for all your love. You leave us with so many memories. Thank you to the staff at Deertrail Cottage, for their loving care of Dad.

A service will be held at St Michael and All Angels Church, 2858 Mill St., Chemainus, at 11:30 am on Thursday, February 4th. Reception to follow.  Also, please join us in a Celebration of Dad’s Life on Sunday, February 7th (Dad’s birthdate) from 1:00-3:00 pm at Strawberry Vale Community Club Hall, corner of Burnside Road and High Street, Victoria.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Strawberry Vale Community Club Bursary Fund or the Arion Choir Bursary Fund.

We feel honored and privileged to have known Dick and to have shared his company over the years. We regret his passing but respect his active life and longevity. He made a significant difference to those who loved and knew him. Our lasting memories include family get togethers, visits to his wonderful cabin and the Arion Choir.

  • Claire Akhust (nee Fuller)

Sending my fondest regards to the family and deepest sympathies for Dick’s passing….I have very lovely memories of Dick and Betty’s kindness when I visited in 1983. Just looking at photos of a fishing trip: Dick, Gail and Andrew and I to celebrate Andrew’s birthday (it says in my album!).
So sorry not to be able to be with you as you celebrate a lovely man.
    lots of love

    Claire (and husband Graeme)
