Our beloved mother passed away peacefully at Luther Court Care Home. Madalena was born in Ponta Garça, Sâo Miguel, Azores, Portugal. She immigrated to Canada at the age of 23, joining her husband, Alfredo, and they settled in Victoria, BC.
She is predeceased by her husband, Alfredo Tavares; parents, Franciso Mendonça and Maria de Lourdes Pacheco; sisters, Conceiçâo, Hortência; brothers, Manuel, Vergilio, Joâo Elias. Madelena is survived by her daughters, Louisa, Suzana (Barry); son, Fred; grandchildren, Tyler, Jeffrey, Selena, Alyssa; sisters, Marta and Regina; brother, José and many nieces, nephews and friends.
There were many challenges in coming to Canada. Madalena eagerly embraced them all, especially learning to read, write and speak English. Throughout her working life, she engaged with people in a positive way which led to long lasting friendships.
Madalena took pride in tending her garden and every summer, there were plentiful fresh figs to be picked. She enjoyed cooking/baking and we will miss her traditional Portuguese cuisine. We were blessed to have her as our mother and we will cherish her memory forever. Always in our hearts; Para sempre nos nossos corações.
Prayers will be held on Thursday, January 21st at 6:45pm at Our Lady of Fatima Church, 4635 Elk Lake Road, Saanich, BC. The Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Friday, January 22nd at 11:00am with interment to follow at Royal Oak Burial Park.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to The Heart and Stroke Foundation.
