Today I lost the love of my life, my Jack after 22 years of marriage and the Humphries lost a wonderful father, grandfather, great-grandfather and uncle.

He leaves behind his loving and devoted wife, Delma whom he called DJ.  He is predeceased by parents, John and Christina; his first wife, Molly; brothers, Al (Eve) and Ian (Addie). He leaves behind his daughters, Terry (Ray), Penny (Phil); sister, Elaine (Jack); granddaughters, Robin, Tracy, Kelly, Kirsten, and Catherine and great-grandchildren, Jaedyn, Vivi, Megan, Erin, Bryn, Marshall, Wyatt and Nathan, plus many nieces and nephews.

Jack was born in Raymore, Saskatchewan and moved to Victoria at a very young age.

Jack proudly served with the Royal Canadian Navy and fought for our country during World War II and Korea. He played a large part in the invasion of Normandy. After serving in the Royal Canadian Navy, Jack worked in the dockyard for many years.

He enjoyed Ball Room Dancing and instructing and would have done very well on Dancing with the Stars in his day. He loved golf (got a hole in one in 2004) and his gardening especially growing his tomatoes with pride and fish heads.

We spent every year in October holidaying in Hawaii. It was our second home and we will miss all the friends we made there. They were our Ohana (that is family in Hawaiian).

All the dogs in the neighbourhood would go by and look up the driveway to see if Jack was there to give them cookies. Even when the garage doors were closed, they had to be dragged away because he was not there.

A special thanks to David Ian (Erdi), for visiting his Uncle Jack while at home and in the hospital. Uncle Jack enjoyed seeing them both. Thank you to John (Joan) for selling his precious Oldsmobile for his Uncle Jack. It was sad to see it go but it went to a good home.

Special thanks to all the doctors and nurses of the Royal Jubilee and Victoria General Hospitals for their kindness and care. They were so thoughtful and caring to Jack and myself.

A celebration of Jack’s life will be held at McCall’s Funeral Home on June 29, 2016 at 10:00 a.m. at Johnson and Vancouver Streets. Reception to follow, then interment at Royal Oak Cemetery.

Condolences may be offered to the family below.

We have been Jack and Delma’s backyard neighbours since 2008. He soon gave us tomatoe growing hints. We had our Paddy then, she enjoyed Jack’s dog treats. Most of all we and our visitors checked for the latest flag!! We salute Jack’s naval service. We miss him being there. Hugs and condolences to Delma and the Humphries family.

Delma, I am so sorry to hear the loss of your beloved Jack. His smile, his wit, his charm and what a gentleman he was!! When he comes into the branch he always tips his hat and says hello to me. I will miss him very much. May the 22 years of memories that you had with him bring you comfort. Your Jack was an exceptional man Delma. Please take care and hope to see you soon.

It was my privilege to deliver the Times Colonist to the Humphries’ home some years ago, and knew Jack quite well. I want to take this opportunity to express sincere condolences to Delma and the rest of the family.

  • Jacquie

He will be missed by all of us at the branch. He always had a smile and a twinkle in his eye. It’s an honor to have known Jack. My thoughts and prayers are with you Delma.

We all miss our neighbour 3 doors away around the corner. Annie and Frankie always stop and look for Jack and hopefully score a biscuit. If Jack wasn’t there, Delma would step in.

We knew Jack since moving here in 1984. He always had a smile and loved working in his yard.

    Love you both!

All four of us will miss you terribly. Frankie and Annie are two little four legged buddies that are ones that still stop and look for any activity up in your garage or yard. They loved their biscuits!!!

We had known Jack for 32 years as his neighbours 3 doors away around the corner. He always put on a smile and we never knew any different. If it wasn’t Jack giving out the biscuits, Delma would step in.

    We will miss him terribly!

    Thinking of you!

Our deepest condolences to you Delma. Also to his Family and Friends. Jack was a true gentleman. He always greeted me with a big smile and a tip of his hat. Such and old fashioned Man who doted on his beautiful wife, always buying her flowers. I believe the word for Jack is debonair. Such a kind soul who will be missed by so many people. RIP our Friend xo
    Much love xo

I will miss his hugs, smile, and kindness. I’m thankful that your trips to Hawaii brought us together and seeing you both come in for breakfast was always the best part of my day! Rest in Love, Jack! Prayers for you and the family, Delma! All my Aloha, Makale’a

My sincere condolences to Delma and the Humphries family for your loss. Jack definitely touched the lives of all those who knew him and loved him. I am very glad that I was able to meet Jack and grateful for all the stories that I’ve heard about him. He was a loving man, and a proud Veteran, and I once again humbly thank you Jack Humphries for your service.

My deepest and most heart felt condolences to you Delma and family. When my family moved to Victoria across the street, I felt like a stranger in a strange land until I met jack. He always made me feel like family. Like an old friend I was meeting again for the first time. I can still see his smile and I feel so blessed to have been even a small part in the life of such a great and honourable man.

  • Carol Thibault and Norm Chouinard

Our grand ole veteran Jack with his snazzy hats and dapper fashion sense is on his way to paradise! As neighbours for almost 12 years- life in this neighbourhood will be very different without Jack’s warm smile, gracious hospitality and neverending stories about the Garry Oak trees and how to grow the perfect tomato with his famous fish fertilizer recipe! We are thinking of you Delma and know this will be a difficult time adjusting to life without your man. Big hug of love Carol and Norm.
