Donald Nixon passed away peacefully on June 29, 2009 after a long illness. He was 75. Predeceased by his wife of 51 years, Mary; he leaves behind his son and the many friends, acquaintances, colleagues and students he got to know during a teaching career that spanned three continents and four decades, in roles that ranged from physics teacher, science department head, and high school principal to university instructor. He was, from his first day to his last, an honest, caring and honorable man, slow to anger, quick to forgiveness, friendly, generous and kind. He will be remembered as a devoted husband, a caring father, a loyal friend, and a gifted educator. He will be missed, always. His son wishes to thank everyone for the comfort and support they have provided during these difficult days.

A memorial celebration of a life well-lived will he held at MCCALL BROS. FLORAL CHAPEL, Johnson & Vancouver Streets, Victoria, BC, on Wednesday, July 15, 2009 at 3:00 pm. Donations may be made to the charity of your choice in lieu of other tributes.

    Dear Mark:

Charles and I are sorry to hear of your Dad’s passing and we extend to you our deepest sympathy. I shall always remember him fondly as a gentleman, a good host, and someone who loved Mary very much. I hope that your memories of them both will sustain you in the days ahead.

To the family of Don Nixon,

So sorry to hear of the passing of Don. I first met Don at the beginning of my teaching career in 1969/75 at Harry Ainlay High School in Edmonton. After a sabbatical, Don was principal at Ross Sheppard High School and was instrumental in hiring me for a teaching position there. I guess I followed Don around because of what an outstanding man he was. Respected by students and staff alike. Always an ‘open-door’ policy and he dedicated 100% of his attention to any discussions I had with him. He was instrumental in encouraging my eventual movement into administration. I will always remember Don as a man of integrity. He truly made a positive impact on all who had the pleasure of working with him. Our thoughts to out to all family members and friends of Don. May his character continue to offer us all guidance and cherished memories as we move forward with our lives.

So sorry to hear of Donald’a death – I taught with Mary for 20 years at UVic, and got to know Donald through her.

We often remember them for an odd reason which I think I mentioned to Donald after Mary’s funeral: we bought the old wooden chairs which used to be on their deck and I think were made in a school workshop somewhere – they are now in our cottage on Saturna Island.

I am sorry I will be unable to attend the memorial service, but please accept my condolences – it must have been a very difficult year.

    Sincerely

    Alastair Glegg
