Passed away peacefully at Mount St. Mary, Victoria, B.C. on April 24, 2016.  Born on February 23, 1928 in Liverpool, England.  Son of Thomas and Margaret McHugh.  He is survived by Janita, his wife of 42 years; sons, Stephen and Frank; daughter-in-law, Tara; grandchildren, Frances Rose and Miles; nephew, Paul and nieces, Julia and Miriam in England.

Bernard received his teacher training at St. Mary’s College, London and his BA and MA at Cambridge and MEd at UVic.  After a career as a teacher and Headmaster in England, he came to Canada in 1974 and taught at Victoria High School until his retirement in 1993.  He was a dedicated and innovative teacher and tried especially hard to help students who were having difficulty attaining their educational goals.  Bernard was an ardent rugby fan and played for Cambridge during his time there.  He loved to travel, do woodwork, read, share stories with his friends, and most of all, to spend time with his family.  A man of great faith, he was active in his parish and in the Diocese of Victoria.  He will be greatly missed.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at the Holy Cross Catholic Parish, 4049 Gordon Head Road, on Monday, May 2, 2016 at 11:00 a.m.  Interment will be at Ross Bay Cemetery at 2:00 p.m.

In lieu of flowers, donations to the Mount St. Mary Foundation or the Society of St. Vincent de Paul Ozanam Centre would be appreciated.
