MAH, ALMA JOAN (née Currie) July 28, 1931 to April 18, 2016 With deep sorrow we announce the death of Alma J. Mah. Predeceased by her husband of 52 years, Robinson “Robbie” Mah, she will be mourned by her two daughters, Corinne and Louanne (Alistair McKinnon). She also leaves behind sisters Edna Bowen and Sheila Mazzone and numerous in-laws, nieces and nephews on Vancouver Island and the Lower Mainland.

Alma was raised in the Comox Valley and as a youth excelled in basketball and mountain climbing. She and Rob met and married in Port Alberni, where they both taught school for decades and later operated a motel. They retired to Victoria where she enjoyed gardening, reading, and doing tai chi.

Heartfelt appreciation goes to all the family, friends, and medical professionals who gave her support and comfort, especially the caring staff of Amica at Douglas House where she lived for the past eight years.

No service by request.  Flowers gratefully declined.

Condolences may be offered to the family below.

Corinne and Louanne, your parents were two of our very favourite people. We had so many good times and laughs with them in Germany, Victoria and Ontario. They were kind, loving and generous to all who knew them. We loved them and treasured them as friends. Your mom always made me laugh. She tried to teach me Tai Chi the last time that I saw her and we had to stop and sit down because we were laughing so hard. I know she used to always fuss over the two of you but you were blessed to have such a loving Mom. We are thinking of you at this time and will always think of our dear friend Alma, as we have thought of your dad.
    Our love to you,
    Barb & Guy

    Dear Louanne and Corinne
I am so sorry to hear of your mom’s passing. Like my sister Michele, I too have fond memories of childhood get togethers. When your parents moved to Victoria, I enjoyed our visits when my mom was in town. There were alway laughs, lively discussions and good meals! I still have a number of plants growing in my yard that were started from cuttings generously provided by your parents. I think of Robbie and Alma every time they bloom.
    With sympathy for your loss,
    Suzanne Webb

I’m so sorry for your loss, Corinne. As I only moved to Douglas House last September, I didn’t get to know your mother, but I’m sure she will be missed by many of the other residents and staff.

I was very sorry to read in the Times-Colonist yesterday that my dear basketball coach, Alma Currie Mah from 1952-53 had died. I remember with great fondness how she was so positive and upbeat as she taught us young ones (11 and 12 year olds) the basic skills of basketball. She helped us win 3rd place in the B.C. Finals. This was the commercial league, separate from any school league. Even though Alma Currie worked all day in the school system, she still volunteered her time to work with us. Alma treated all of us with respect. She was a wonderful role model for me because she taught me that respect, enthusiasm and positive reinforcement are keys to getting young people to learn.
Many years later, when I was a social worker connected with the school system in Port Alberni I ran across Alma because she was a home/school teacher, responsible for teaching children who had been suspended from school for varying periods of time. Applying again those same qualities to the children on her caseload, she encouraged many a troubled child to try again, once they were allowed back in school.
If there is a celebration of life for Alma, I would like to attend. Could you notify me if that happens? Thank you

Alma and I taught together in Port Alberni for years. We had our children at almost the same time. Our birthdays are in the same year and only two weeks apart. We visited each other for family dinners over the years. She will always be a close friend in my heart and always remembered. Condolences to the family.
