August 10, 1916 – May 3, 2014

Marjorie was born near Clair, Saskatchewan, the middle of three children born to Violet and Thomas Vaulkhard, homesteading farmers from England.  At the age of 18, she moved with her family to Shawnigan Lake, where she worked in the family general store and post office at Cliffside, until settling in Victoria in 1946.  She married Ed Stokes, and for several years, was an employee of Eaton’s.  Marjorie was predeceased by her husband, Ed, her sister, Bess Martin, her brother, Tom Vaulkhard, and her sister-in-law, Georgie Vaulkhard.  She is survived by her five nieces and nephews, and their families, Norma, Marty, and Dave Martin, Susan Vernon, and Gerry Vaulkhard, who all remember her lovingly as an integral part of their early lives. Special thanks are extended to her wonderful friends, Joe and Sandy Rozon, and Josie Harrington, who will miss Marjorie’s sweet nature, sense of humour, and infectious smile.  Thanks also to Beacon Community Services, the staff of Oak Bay Lodge, her home for the past month, and to her doctor of many years, Dave Hepburn.

A Graveside Service will be held at Hatley Memorial Gardens, 2050 Sooke Road in Colwood at  1:30 pm  on Friday, May 9, 2014.  Condolences may be offered to the family below.

    Our thoughts go out to the Vaulkhard Family and Martin Family. The one thing that I can say about Auntie Marjorie is that you always had a smile on your face when you saw her. It must be a trait that the Vaulkhard children must have had. The same went for Grandma Bess & Uncle Tom.

    Marjorie had a sweet and caring nature to her. One instance that I will always remember was on my wedding day, she approached Drew and wished him congratulations before he was about to be married, Drew responded with, “I’m not Colin Auntie Marjorie, I’m Drew.” Her response was, “Colin, there’s no time to joke on your wedding day.”

    What can I say, that’s Auntie Marjorie for you, always putting a smile on the faces of the people around her. She will be missed, hopefully she can say hi to my Grandma Bess.

    With Love from;
    Colin, Karolina, Little Colin, & Karisa
