May 22, 1928 – May 15, 2015

Peggy passed away peacefully at her residence at Parkwood Place on Friday, May 15th in the kind and caring oversight of her Luxcare aides. Predeceased by her husband, John R. H. Ley and her first husband, Bill Nelson, as well as her dear sister, Madeline. Cherished mother of Shirley and Gregory, survived by sister, Vicky Eckert, and brothers Carl, Felix and Ben Eckert, as well as many nieces and nephews. Peggy will always be remembered by her family and friends as the ‘Busy Beaver’.

After finishing Senior Metric she graduated from Business Administration and Cosmetology, starting her own hairdressing business. She became a Gemologist when she moved to the coast and was employed at Mappins and Birks Jewelers, later adding medical dicta-typist to her resume. She met her husband John Ley in Victoria and worked for him as secretary in his insurance business. She adored Victoria, especially the Inner Harbour which became her home, and enjoyed working with people doing many volunteer projects, organizing events as well as fundraisers for charities. She was interested and active in the local political arena where she found her people skills invaluable. In her younger years she was a good tennis player, and enjoyed golfing, curling, ten pin and later on lawn bowling, which she pursued with vigor after her husband’s retirement from business. She joined the Victoria Lawn Bowling Club, and was not only active for many years on the Social Committee and as Secretary, but instrumental in reviving and rebuilding the Club. She loved gardening and the flowers on her condo terrace were always a pleasure for everyone. She had a passion for antiques and was adept at reupholstering favourite finds. She loved to travel and did so extensively after retirement. She was a determined and loving lady.

Mom, you deserve a rest. Your children, family and friends miss you – always love you.

Peggy will be cremated, no service on request. Donations may be sent to the Victoria Hospitals Foundation, 1952 Bay Street, Victoria, British Columbia, V8R 1J8, Telephone 250-414-6688.

A Celebration of Life to commemorate Peggy’s life will be held at the Victoria Lawn Bowling Club at Beacon Hill Park, Nursery Road off Park Boulevard by the Tennis Courts on Wednesday, May 27th from 3:00 to 5:00 p.m. It will be a “in Lawn Bowling” tradition, an all-white dress code and flat shoes should you wish to bowl a ball is suggested.
