Passed away peacefully on May 5th, 2014 at the Royal Jubilee Hospital in Victoria, BC.

Margaret is survived by several cousins in England and by many friends in Canada and England.

Born and educated in England, Margaret served in the Women’s Royal Naval Service during the latter part of World War Two. Following the war, she obtained a teaching diploma from Redlands in Bristol, England and taught school in Kent until she emigrated to Canada in 1953. She worked at the University of Toronto until 1967, when she moved to Saskatoon to help establish the College of Dentistry at the University of Saskatchewan.  Following her retirement in 1989, Margaret moved to Victoria.

From 1991-1993, she served as President of the James Bay United Church Women and was also a member of the Executive of the Newcomers Club for the same period.

A Memorial Service will be held at James Bay United Church, 511 Michigan Street, Victoria on Monday May 12th at 10 a.m. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Heart & Stroke Foundation of BC & Yukon.

Special thanks to Dr. Cook, the staff at the Royal Jubilee Hospital, Oak Bay Lodge and the VIHA for their compassion and care during her final days.

Marg worked in a secretarial role with our father, Jack Paynter, at the University of Toronto. They were a great team, and when he accepted the Deanship at the fledgling College of Dentistry at the University of Saskatchewan, he immediately offered her the position of Dean’s secretary. (I will not forget the look of worry on my father’s face during the days that she was considering the offer nor the relief when she accepted.) Marg was a regular visitor to our home when we were growing up. At the office, she always greeted us with a warm smile and, to our delight, let us play with her (then new) electric typewriter. We will remember her fondly as a woman of strong character, intelligence, wit and charm, and a dear friend of the family. We extend our sincere condolences to her family and to all who knew her.

“Aunty Margie” was a treasured and dear family friend in my sister’s and my childhood. I am very sorry to hear that Aunty Margie has passed away. My condolences to Margaret’s friends and family.

  • Kaye Mellon

My condolences to Margy’s family. I worked with her at the Univ. of Sask. Dept of Dentistry. She was a wonderful person, always so upbeat and so enjoyed visiting with her. Have been friends since then.

Similar to the comments made by Dr. Dennis Lanigan, I also knew Marg as both a dental student and later as a faculty member at the College of Dentistry, University of Saskatchewan. Marg was a true lady who treated everyone – students, staff, faculty – with kindness, interest and respect. Everyone who knew and worked with her remember her well, and with great fondness.

  • Dr. Dennis T. Lanigan

I knew Marg Murphy both as a student and later as a faculty member at the College of Dentistry, University of Saskatchewan. We kept in contact after her retirement. Marg was an able administrator and a wonderful person to work with. She was well liked by all the students, faculty, and staff at the College of Dentistry. Her warm engaging personality will be greatly missed by all her friends in Saskatoon.

On behalf of Beckley Farm Lodge’s Auxiliary, I wish to send our condolences to Margaret’s family. Margaret was always a lady, always had a smile and a hearty laugh. She would invite all her many friends to come and enjoy “tea and goodies” at Beckley’s fundraising events. She enjoyed a rich and full life.

    Goodbye Margaret.
