It is with great sorrow that the family of Lois announces that she passed away in the early morning hours of November 17, 2013 at the age of 88. Predeceased by Ralph, her husband of 61 years, she is lovingly remembered by her children, Lynn Daffe and Gary (Shelley); her grandchildren, Danielle, Kevin (Kathleen), Alison (Quinn), Adam and Carly and her great-grandchildren, Mickey, Issac and Aidan. She is also survived by her sister, Ethel and brother, John. Born in Tisdale, Saskatchewan and raised in Eldersley, Lois taught in a one-room school house in Eldersley, where she met Ralph. Side by side they worked in a variety of businesses in Biggar, Assiniboia and Maple Creek and then in Victoria where they moved in1956, first buying and operating the Craigflower Motel (living in the Craigflower Manorhouse), then the Dairy Queen on Hillside and created Acme Supplies. In her retirement, several winters were spent in Arizona. She enjoyed golfing, travelling, playing bridge, reading, attending her grandchildrens’ ball games, walking, Sunday dinners with family and any and all activities that stimulated her mind. She was a proud lady who lived her life with dignity and grace. She was fiercely independent and had a sharp and inquiring mind. Her strong values and work ethic live on in her children. She was an exemplary role model to her family – she will be lovingly remembered and truly missed – as a mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, bridge partner and friend.

A Service of Remembrance will be held at McCall’s Downtown, Johnson & Vancouver Streets, on Saturday, November 23rd at 11:00 am for family and friends. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Red Cross Equipment Loan Program in Victoria at 909 Fairfield Road. Condolences may be offered to the family below.

I first met Lois and Ralph when I moved to Pemberton Road in 2005. Ralph always had dog treats in his pocket and my dog, Maggie, loved him for that. In the succeeding years I had many pleasant conversations with Lois, at our strata or the local Thriftys, about books and holidays. Lois so enjoyed her travels with Lynn, especially the trip to Turkey where she felt seniors were treated with the greatest of respect. Lois was a kind person, a good neighbour, and an astute observer of human nature. It was a pleasure to have known her.

I know that Lois is in a place now trying to decide whether she should play bridge or Scrabble. Either one is a perfectly respectable memory of Lois Hanson for me. I loved her matter-of-factness attitude and she will be a dearly missed Mom of Lynn Daffe but also as a travel companion. I am sorry for your loss.

We are thinking of you all at this time. While a great loss to your family, Lois leaves behind her strong sense of who she was and knowledge of what she stood for. She was dignified with as sense of fairness, a strong grasp of justice and a phenomenal wit and sense of humor. We were last treated to Lois’s presence ten months ago at Kevin and Kathleen’s wedding reception where we shared a table and lively conversation and commentary. Lois loved all of her family immensely! She lived fully and right to the end in a manner which most of us will only aspire to. We watched Lois fully participate in the lives of her family and offer caring support to all, when here in Whitehorse. Whether helping kids, playing bridge, planning a canal trip with Lynn, half way around the world, Lois was keen and always a full participant. She was a pleasure to spend time with and conversations were never dull. She will be missed and leaves to her great credit, next generations of likewise strong, caring and committed parents and grandparents. We are thinking of you all during this tough time. We look forward to seeing you upon your return. Love, Mary Ann & Rob

    Dear Lynn:
We were so sorry to hear of your loss, and send our condolences. We didn’t know Lois very well, but were her neighbours for a few months at 12-949 Pemberton. She was very kind and helpful, and we wish we’d had the opportunity to get to know her better — she was a remarkable lady, and it sounds as though she led a very full life. I hope you have lots of good memories to give you comfort.
    With much sympathy,
    Vanessa and John
