Leonard George Coverdale passed away peacefully at Victoria BC on August 13, 2015 at the age of 89 years.

Predeceased by his wife Anne and daughter Janie Atkinson, survived by his loving wife Norma, and lovingly remembered by his children; Susan (Fred) Borland, Marianne (Wayne) Whittet, Clifton (Marjorie), Richard, Nancy (Douglas) Rutherford. Numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren; brother Ken (Shirley); nieces and nephews, friends and family and well-loved dog Amy.
Born in Victoria on December 13th, 1925, Len lived most of his life in the Victoria area. His chosen career was that of a carpenter and during his marriage to Anne and as they raised their many children, he built numerous houses in Comox, Victoria, Saanich, and on the Saanich Peninsula. Later on in life he made the decision to work for School District #63.  Len opted for an early retirement from the School District to spend more time with his wife Anne during her battle with cancer.

Len’s love for swimming was strong right from the beginning. Taking to the water at a young age and learning to swim he continued on from swimming at Cordova Bay Beach, Elk Lake and the original Crystal Gardens, until he started competitive swimming in Junior High. His competitive swimming career was cut short when he made the decision to serve Canada during WW2. He renewed his role as competitive swimmer after retirement, joining the Victoria Silver Streaks where he broke many records with some still holding to this day. His connection with the Silver Streaks renewed a friendship with Norma Powell who later became his wife. Len’s last years were made special by the love he had found with Norma and their mutual passion for swimming. Len also had a great love of fishing and hunting that was passed onto his children and grandchildren. Len’s heart was always open to share his boat and his homemade fishing jigs with friends, family or anyone that was interested.  Special Thanks to the Neurological ward at VGH for their support and caring in his last days after his stroke.

Visitation will be held at McCALL BROS. , Johnson & Vancouver Streets on Sunday, August 23, 2015 from 2:00 – 4:00 pm. A Celebration of Len’s life will be held on Monday, August 24, 2015 12:30 pm at Victoria Alliance Church, 1792 Townley St. Victoria BC with Pastor Cameron Wathen officiating.  Interment will be at Royal Oak Burial Park at 11:00 am prior to service.  Reception at Victoria Alliance Church, 1792 Townley St. Victoria BC following the service.

  • Bernie Ens

Our thoughts and prayers go out to you. Kay and Bernie were close friends of your Mom, and Dad, as Anne and Kay schooled and worked together as young women. We fondly remember a wonderful family ocean fishing vacation Len was kind enough to take all of us out on in the 1970’s. Coincidentally, I have not again been in the ocean to fish since, until this July! Although my Dad, Bernie, had a stroke 13 years ago, he still remembers Ann and Len from so many years ago. Wishing you peace and comfort in the rich lifetime of memories that I know your family must share.
