Leona passed away peacefully at her home in Victoria, B.C. on June 20, 2014, at the age of 102. Leona was born in Loomis, Washington, on October 13, 1911. Predeceased by her loving husband, Dr. Raymond C. Newby, brother, Ronald, and sister, Claudia. Survived by son, Cordell (Marti) of Wenatchee, Washington, daughter, Geraldine Zwicker of Indianapolis, Indiana, sister, Elaine, of Wenatchee, Washington, brother, Phillip, of Naperville, Illinois, sister Gwen of Reno, Nevada; 6 grandchildren, Randy, Thomas, and Karen Zwicker, Debra Zwicker-Sobrepena, Cecil and Heather Newby; 7 great-grandchildren, Nadia and Caleb Zwicker, Jessica, Serena, and Zachary Zwicker-Sobrepena, Michele and Tie Newby and numerous nieces and nephews. She attended Washington State University in Pullman, Washington and was a life-long member of the Delta Delta Delta Sorority. While at Washington State University, she met her husband Chick, the love of her life. They were married in Cashmere, Washington on December 28, 1936 and moved to Victoria, B.C. She was initiated in Chapter AI of the P.E.O. in 1951 and was a member for 63 years. She also was a life-long member of the Comitas Club in Victoria. Leona had a full life, enjoyed traveling all over the world, reading, family adventures, and keeping up to date on local and world events.
A celebration of her life will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, August 30, 2014 in McCall Bros. Family Chapel, Johnson & Vancouver Streets with a reception afterward in McCall’s Family Centre. Urn interment will follow at Royal Oak Burial Park. Flowers are gratefully declined; those wishing may make donations to the charity of their choice.
