November 11, 1921 – January 13, 2015

Having lived a good, full life, our Dad went home to Jesus in his 94th year.  Son of Lena and William Henkel, and older brother to Arthur, Lawrence was born in Winnipeg, Manitoba.  An RCAF Veteran, Dad returned to Canada and married Nan Logan in 1945.   After graduation from Bible School, Dad and Mom lived 1 ½ years in Vancouver where Brenda Dawn was born and attended  Apostolic Tabernacle with pastor Ern Baxter.  It was a special time for them.  Their first pastorship was in a little log church and parsonage with no running water, electricity and an outhouse.  The farm folks were poor but big in heart.  Many prairie church pastorates followed as did more children – Bob, Ruth, Bev, and Art, and in 1959 Lawrence and Nan moved to Victoria where Nan’s parents and siblings lived.  They then pastored Campbell River Pentecostal Church for 2 ½ years before returning to Victoria.  Dad later worked for the Ministry of Highways Provincial Government aircraft division until retirement, all while pastoring the fine folks at Oldfield Road Gospel Chapel for nine years.   Dad also loved guest preaching at the Chinese Pentecostal Church and Glad Tidings in Victoria and ministering in Honduras and Norway.  When Mom passed away in 1998, they had enjoyed 53 years of marriage.  Dad married Alma Parker from Portland Oregon in 1999.   They had 15 years together.  Alma’s love and care for Dad, especially during the final years, was a blessing.  Dad enjoyed planning trips, travelling, reading, and his family. Lawrence is forever with the Lord and leaves behind his loving wife Alma, Brenda (Michael), Bob (Jan), Ruth (Dean), Bev (Jan Egil), Art (Karen), 17 grandchildren and 23 great-grandchildren.  Till we meet again.

Thank you to Broadmead Lodge West Coast Wing personnel and for those who came to visit Dad there.  Special mention to Dad’s close friends, Keith & Sharon MacKay.

We invite you to Lawrence’s Celebration of Life on Wednesday, January 21st at 2 p.m. at Glad Tidings Church, 842 North Park Street.
