Passed away suddenly at his home on September 25, 2010. After a year of enduring the pain of losing his loving wife, his health declined and he was relieved of his grief. Born Lawrence Edgar Ellis on June 20, 1950 in Victoria, B.C., Larry was a permanent fixture in the Esquimalt neighbourhood. He rode his bike down to Fleming Beach, swam at the Esquimalt Recreation Center and walked his Airedales through Saxe Pointe, always stopping to chat with other neighbourhood folks. As a boy, Larry attended Lampson Street School and as a teen, he worked at the ice rink playing records for the public skate. Larry was active in either hockey, biking, swimming, running or tennis, most of his life. He worked many years for the Times Colonist on the press room floor. Larry is predeceased by his wife, Donna and his father, Edgar. He is survived by his mother, Rose; brother, Norman (Jan); two stepdaughters, Jenny (Gregg), Tammy (Jayson) and three grandchildren, Mateo, Milyana and Chase. He will be greatly missed by all he leaves behind but for him, we are sure that the reunion was sweet with his “Donna Marie”.

A Memorial Service will be held in MCCALL BROS. FLORAL CHAPEL, Johnson & Vancouver Streets, on Wednesday, October 6, 2010 at 2:00 p.m. Condolences may be offered to the family at www.mccallbros.com.

Very sorry to hear of Larry’s passing, lost contact with the family but never forgot them. My Mom and Larry’s Mom were pals, we were the kids next door.

Sorry to hear of Larry’s passing! I always remember being envious of his wonderful skating abilities during his years as an ice rink attendant. He was a great guy and I’m sure he will be missed by all.

  • Kathy Hagerty

My twin brother and I were classmates of Larry all through high school in Esquimalt and we are so saddened to hear of his passing. It hits close to home when you loose someone you went through school with, especially someone like Larry. Everyone liked him, he was such a nice guy and so upbeat … I immediately recognized his picture in the paper, he has changed so little over the years. Our hearts go out to his family, especially his Mom. Sometimes the grief of losing a spouse can overwhelm and overcome, I’ve been there. I hope that knowing he is at peace and with his wife now is some concillation.
    Sincerely,
    Kathy Hagerty

Met Larry many years ago and we chatted often during our walks with our dogs in Saxe Point Park and strolling around the tight-knit community of Esquimalt. He was also my email buddy! He died of a broken heart when he lost Donna, then Magic, his airedale.

He dearly loved his ‘girls’, his Mom, Rose and Jenny and Tammy. He spoke fondly of the grandchildren. May he rest in peace.
