Joe Schauerte – A picture of my life.

I was born 27 November 1924, in a little shack on the prairie.  It wasn’t until a few years later the big house was moved to the home site.  I grew up having to do chores – feeding the chickens and gathering the eggs, feeding the cows, pigs and horses.

I went to Yarrow school, which had approximately 30 students, grade 1 to 9.  I skipped a grade as I was the only one in that grade.  It was a little over a mile to school; I walked most of the time.  My brother and I would go early to light the fire in the big heater.  Got my grade 10 at Mars school, were I rode or walked the 4 miles to get there.  Every year I missed the first two months of school, because of the harvesting.  At age ten I was driving the hay rake and at 14 held my own on the thrashing crew.

I left home and went to work for the neighbours, turning sixteen that fall.  Stayed there for two years and made the grand total of $660.00 a year.  Left there and went to work for Burns Ranch outside of Calgary, there my wages jumped to $85.00 a month.  At the ranch I worked in the dairy, milking and looking after 60 cows.  Left the dairy and did the farming, then after two years went back to the neighbourhood and worked for different farmers.  Even did a stint in the smelting company at Trail.

Eventually I went back to Calgary and worked for a lather and plastering Company.  When the cold weather stopped that work I joined the Navy.  I left for Nova Scotia to take the new entry training.  Ended up posted at Naden, the Navy Base in Esquimalt and took more courses in food and clothing supplies.

I was drafted to a ship, the Beacon Hill and spent the next two years onboard, then was back on shore assigned to food supply stores in Dockyard; where we supplied the ships with food.  I left the Navy in 1956 and started delivering milk for Palm Dairies.  After a year I went to work at Eaton’s in parcel delivery for the next 5 years.

Then I moved on and worked for MacDonald’s Furniture for a while till I went to work at Marshalwells.  Then I got a chance to go back to Eaton’s and did so.

During this time I also worked part time at the Legion and for two different taxi companies.

I ended my work career at Eaton’s selling appliances and TVs, for the next 25 years.  I served on the Charity Committee for 20 years and also on the Eaton Employee Association for 18 years.  I was selected, along with other staff (no management) to go to Vancouver once a month for a 10 month workshop under the Director for the Superintendent of BC Stores.

I finally retired in November, 1989 and became a member of Eaton’s Quarter Century Club.  We would meet for lunch regularly in the old cafeteria to tell long tales and get out of our wife’s hair.

After retiring I took up woodcraft and painting then had the pleasure of creating projects, giving most of my creations away to family and friends.  We also had a large garden where I grew flowers and veggies and shared them with many others.

Now we also had the time to do a bit of travelling.  We took a number of trips to the States, across Canada, to England and Scotland for a month and also visited family in China for a month.  We took a cruise to Alaska and one that cruised around the Hawaii Islands.

I have been a member of St. Patrick’s Parish for over 50 years.  I ushered for 30 years; served on the Parish Council and been a counter for 18 years.  In addition, I also volunteered on other church projects.  Then became a charter member of the St. Patrick’s Council and served as a Financial Secretary for 10 years, as well as the Charity Appeal Chairman for 18 years.

I joined the Knights of Columbus in October, 1949 in Pincher Creek, Alberta.  Then I transferred to the Calgary Council and then onto Victoria Council.  There I served as a Grand Knight; District Deputy for 6.5 years and an insurance field agent for 3 years.

I joined the 4th Degree in 1967 and served 3 terms as the Faithful Navigator.  I started the International Night with our American Brother Knights, 38 years ago.  We have been going back and forth from Victoria to Port Angeles every year since.

I have been a Legion member now for 65 years.

I had the pleasure of enjoying a sport fishing boat for 18 years and took out many visitors, friends and family for fishing and random whale watching.

I met Jean on a blind date for the nurses Halloween Dance in 1950 and married her in April 1953.  We recently celebrated our 60th Wedding Anniversary.  We raised a fine family and the rest as they say is history.

I am blessed for my faith, my loving wife and partner, my family and my friends.

JoAnn, Nate and family, So sorry to hear of the passing of your Dad JoAnn. I remember how he teased me whenever I’d come over to hang out and the Schauerte’s after school (usually on a Monday so I could have a freshly made bun or a piece of bread always made with love by your Mom) or on the weekend when we’d be hanging out or getting ready to go out!
Our deepest sympathy to the entire Schauerte family, hugs to all.
