John Wilfred Pepper

John Wilfred Pepper

John passed away peacefully with family by his side on June 24, 2009 in Victoria, B.C. at the age of 90 years. Born in Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan on January 17, 1919, he was predeceased by his daughter Connie Young (1998) and his sister Evelyn Lambert (2001). Lovingly remembered by Jean, his wife of 61 years, daughters and sons-in-law; Lois and Peter Mason, Susan and Graham Taylor, Mark Young (Karen) and eight grandchildren of whom he was so proud; Caitlin, David (Maren), Nathaniel and Ben Mason, Jonathan (Michelle), Jesse and Bryn Taylor and Max Young. Also survived by his brother Cliff Pepper (Myrna), sister Margaret King and many dear cousins, nephews and nieces. John was well known in the Cadboro Bay community as the co-founder of Pepper’s grocery store (then Shop-Easy and later renamed Pepper’s in his honour). John’s passion was music. He was an original member of the Victoria Symphony, an accomplished violinist and violist, an avid chamber musician and maker of many stringed instruments. His friends and family will forever remember his loving nature, generosity, sense of humour and joyful spirit. His family would like to acknowledge the kindness of Dr. Wayne DeMott and also the caring community at Shannon Oaks.

A Celebration of John’s life will take place at Cadboro Bay United Church, 2625 Arbutus Rd. on Wednesday, July 8, 2009 at 2:00 pm. Reception to follow at the church. In lieu of flowers, the family would be grateful for donations made in John’s memory to the Canadian Diabetes Association 276-2950 Douglas St., Victoria, B.C. V8T 4N4 or The David Foster Foundation 212 Henry St., Victoria, B.C. V9A 3H9.

John was a very kind and forgiving person – after all he hired my brothers Ian, Dick, Bruce, David, and me to work at Shop-Easy. We all enjoyed working for him. He was always willing to do everything for his customers.

As a young boy, I remember John performing in a quartet with my mom, loving every minute playing the violin.

Our sincere condolences to the Pepper family. John was truly an amazing member of the community.
