John passed away peacefully on January 13, 2014 in Victoria, BC. John was born on December 31, 1924 in Newport, Shropshire, England. He was predeceased 37 days earlier by his loving wife of 29 years, Jane, and also predeceased by his devoted first wife Stella. John is survived by many close friends and family, including stepdaughter Jill and family in New Zealand; cousin John (Lori) in Calgary and nieces, Madeleine (Geoff), Sue (Dawn) and nephew, Andrew (Debbie) in England.
John was an only child, raised on the family dairy farm in Shropshire. He continued to farm until 1973 at which time he and his first wife Stella emigrated to Canada to work on a dairy farm in Cobble Hill. Widowed in 1981, he moved to Victoria and in 1984 married Jane. With Jane he enjoyed many wonderful trips including passages on the QE2 and a flight on the Concorde. He and Jane loved to travel and share their Victoria condos with family and friends.
John was a true gentleman. He will be remembered for his friendly, polite, genuine nature, his incredible generosity and his sharp, knowledgeable mind. He took an interest in everything and everyone he met. John will be missed by all who knew him. Thanks to Douglas Care Community for the kind care during his final two months.
A celebration of John’s life will be held on Sunday, January 26, 2014 at 1:00 pm at McCall’s Downtown Chapel, 1400 Vancouver Street, Victoria, BC with reception to follow. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to a charity of one’s choice. Condolences may be offered below.
