“Gone Fishing in Heaven”

March 21, 1927 – February 7, 2014

Jack lived his childhood on Pandora and Blanshard Streets. He spent his entire life living and working in Victoria, running a rent-a-car business, working for the Better Business Bureau and numerous other enterprises. He leaves behind his loving wife, Rosemary; two sons, John and Ross, with daughters-in-law, Mary-Helen and Marie-Josée; two grandchildren, Amber and Justin; brother-in-law, Robin, and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his younger sister, Isabel. His love of fishing took the family on many trips into the Chilcotin and Cariboo areas to live in the wild and enjoy this province he loved. He passed along his love of the wilderness to his sons and grandchildren who will continue to explore B.C. in his memory.

A celebration of Jack’s life will be held at St. Mary’s Anglican Church, 1701 Elgin Road, Oak Bay on Saturday, February 15th at 1:30 pm with a reception to follow. In lieu of flowers, please make donations to the B.C. Cancer Society and/or B.C. Children’s Hospital Foundation.

I was so sorry to read of Jack’s passing. My sympathies to you, Rosemary, and your family. I looked forward to his and your visits while I was MOA at Dr. Cuthbert’s office. There was always a smile and cheerful conversation with him (and you).

    Sincerely,
    Yvette Noreen

I was very sad to hear the news of Mr Hawthorne passing. Besides my own family, he is certainly among the people I have known the longest in my life and always one of the most supportive. He seemed to follow my busy life with great interest and optimistically followed the tales of my adventures and family. This year I especially felt that I let him down with less contact until a few minutes ago when I read his obituary here at a hotel in New Delhi, India. Ironically, in my Flight Bag with me now, is his Christmas card with the actual stamp still in my glass-case yet to be stuck. Shocked, I think his message to me is clearly not to take those around us for granted and be more thankful of the rare and fragile genuine friendships that we are lucky enough to have. Mr Hawthorne has contributed to my identity and foundation and made me a better person. His son Ross, is one of only a few true friends I have in this world and I feel greatly saddened for his loss. I’m here for you, far a way, but right beside you. My condolences to the entire Hawthorne clan. Brian & Candy Whittaker, Candicia, Brian Jr, and Lilla (England)

Jack was one of those amazing individuals whom you meet infrequently, yet leaves an indelible impression that inspires one to
be as much of a people-person as he was. Thanks Jack for a life well lived.
