October 24, 1916 – November  23, 2014

Beloved husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather, Jack passed away peacefully with his family by his side. Predeceased by his loving wife, Jane Gairdner Cantelon and son, David Stafford Cantelon.  Survived by his daughter, Lynne Upton (Edward); grandchildren, Carrie Craig (Roddy), James Upton and John Upton (Gogo) and his great-grandchildren, Aimee Craig, Avery and Madeleine Upton.  He is survived by his dear friend, Judie MacKay of Youngston, New York and Palm Desert, California. Jack was born and raised in Vancouver by his parents, Will Cantelon and Edna Cantelon McKergow.  He graduated from St. Michael’s University School in Victoria and attended McGill University in Montreal. He met his beautiful wife, Jane on a train during World War II and was married at Appleby School Chapel in Oakville on December 16th, 1944.  After many happy years in Ontario, Jack convinced Jane to move to Vancouver where they were both delighted to give up snow shovels for umbrellas. Jack had a very successful career in Vancouver in the investment industry first with Gairdner & Co and then with Investax Mangement Inc. which he founded with Andy Jukes and Don Wood.  After Jack retired, he and Jane moved to Victoria.  Jack was an avid golfer, a member of Shaughnessy Golf Club, Victoria Golf Club (where he once shot his age, no small feat) and Marrakesh Country Club in Palm Desert, California. Jack was full of life, very social and incredibly funny.  His sense of humour will be greatly missed.  We are all very grateful to have had Jack in our lives for so long and although he lived to be 98, it still feels too short. Jack wanted us to thank Dr. Michael Mawdsley for his care and to especially thank Helen Wong, who over the years became part of his family.

There will be no service at his request.  Donations may be made to a charity of choice. Condolences may be offered to the family below.

    Dear Lynne,

    Penny and I were so sorry to read of Jack’s death. It has been many years since I have seen him but from reading other condolences, it is obvious that the great qualities he had when our lives touched stayed with him to the end. We should all be so fortunate to live such a long and full life.
    Sincerely,

    Derek (Hopkins)

    Dear Lynn, Ed and family;
    We are saddened to lose our warm and gracious neighbor of the past 15 years. Jack was a delight to be have as a friend – he was a gracious, generous man with a delightful sense of humor and we spent many hours with him laughing and being outrageous !
    I worked with Jack on our Strata Council in both good times and difficult days when we were remediating our complex. Jack displayed a steady hand through all these difficulties and never lost his capacity to disagree graciously with alternate views.
    Jack was a generous host at all times and his “games” evenings were a highlight with his neighbors and friends. We had many laughs as we carpet bowled and played Jack’s favorite game,
    “grab your nuts”!!
    A true friend, an entertaining host, an exceedingly generous man who never lost the common touch. We will miss him greatly but give thanks for the time we had with him. May God rest his soul.
    Ann and Keith.
