March 15, 1927 – May 10, 2014

Born in Woking, England, John passed away peacefully surrounded by his family after a short illness. John is survived by his wife Sylvia of 57 years; sons Roger (Cydney), Geoffrey (Bernice), Mark (Tracy), and Christopher (Kathleen); grandchildren Jeremy, Gillian, Sean, Megan, Carter and Paige; brothers Francis and Patrick (Sally) and sister Gina Isaac.  John graduated from Claire College, Cambridge in 1952 as a medical doctor, completed his national service in Hong Kong, and following his discharge, emigrated to Canada, landing in Victoria in 1955. John completed his internship at the Royal Jubilee Hospital where he met and married Sylvia Hooper. After a surgical residency in London, Ont., John started his career as a family physician in Victoria in 1958 where he continued to practice until taking a position with the Ministry of Health in 1983, until his retirement in 1992. An active member of the medical community, John was president of the Victoria Medical Society 1969/1970 and became an Honorary member of the Society in 1994. Following retirement John continued to be involved, working with Aberdeen Hospital and Broadmead Lodge. John’s passions were his garden, wood working and sailing.

A service celebrating the life of John Higgins will be held at McCall’s Downtown, Johnson & Vancouver Streets, Victoria on Saturday, May 31, 2014 at 2 pm. In lieu of flowers, donations to the Victoria Hospital Foundation are welcome.  Condolences may be offered to the family below.

    Unfortunately, we were not aware of this until now..so much time has passed. So sorry we missed the opportunity to say our farewells to him, but his memory will live on.
