James Wishart Mainguy

In Memorial

Born on October 30, 1919 in Chemainus and died peacefully in the presence of family on February 26, 2010 after a brief illness. Married in 1942 he was predeceased by his wife Lorna (nee Castley) in 1996 and is survived by his children Alison (Tom) Mace, Diana (John) McMahen and his grandchildren Emily, Lorna, Thea and Joe. Following graduation from high school in Duncan, Jim attended Victoria College. He enlisted in the navy during WW II, returning to finish a degree in Economics from UBC. His education was completed with a Master’s degree in Hospital Administration from the University of Minnesota, where he was honoured for his achievement. Returning to B. C. he embarked on a civil service career, retiring as Deputy Minister of Health for B. C. in 1978. Jim will be remembered as a thoughtful, caring man who took an interest in the ideas and needs of others and was always a willing listener. He regularly attended reunions with his high school class and continued sharing his love of music through the Arion Choir and the Grandview Quartet to the end of his life. In his last few years he established a native plant garden and a memorial garden at his church. His love of nature has been passed on through his family. He will be dearly missed by all those who knew him through his work, his interests and his family, of whom he was very proud. A memorial service will be held in Victoria in the near future. Donations in Jim’s memory may be made to the Arion Male Voice Choir, 612 David Street, Victoria B.C., V8T 2E1.

Sincere condolences. It was a privilege and a pleasure to have known Jim. His sunny presence will be truly missed. Betty & Hugh McGann.

  2. Walt & Eileen McConville on March 11th, 2010 10:24 am

We send our condolences to the family. Jim and Walt were in the Arion choir together for quite some time until Walt retired in 2006 when he was 92. Although we are unable to attend the service – Walt is in hospital just now – we will be thinking of Jim at that time.
He and Lorna were such nice people and Jim truly enjoyed the choir and the quartet – it was a pleasure to watch him singing.

  3. Tom Williams on March 12th, 2010 2:20 pm

Cathy and my thoughts and prayers are with you at this time. We were so happy to see Jim at Ruxton last summer. He just happened to be walking ahead of us on the trail. The thought of our cheerful conversation that day stirs many happy remembrances of Jim. He will be missed.
    God bless,
    Tom and Cathy Williams
