1920 – 2014

Howard Edward Engstrom died October 21st, 2014 at the age of 94 following a very brief illness. He was predeceased by his brother, Gordon; sister, Ellen and wife, Erma. Howard was born on April 29, 1920 in the farming community of Tomahawk, Alberta; the youngest son of Mary (nee Langer) and Edward Engstrom.

After spending his youth on the farm, Howard enlisted in the military for the Second World War where he would be posted to Jamaica. Upon his return, he married Erma Medd and had a son, Edward. Howard managed many large commercial, industrial, residential and highway construction projects for Burns and Dutton Construction now CANA, in Alberta, BC and Saskatchewan. During the 1970’s, he managed design and construction of the Calgary Stampede RaceTrack and Grandstand and initial planning for the Saddledome.

Howard and Erma moved to Victoria in 1995 and became active members of the Canadian Forces – Esquimalt Wardroom, as well as at the Canadian Forces Sailing Association.

Howard finally retired at the age of 88. He always felt that working and spending time with young people was the best way to stay alive. His strength, sense of humour, ambition and humility will be greatly missed by his son, Edward and his wife, Jackie; granddaughters and husbands Carol and Dylan, Barb and Janne and Sandra and great-grandchildren, Seamus and MaryJane, along with his large extended family.

A celebration of life will be held in Victoria at Canadian Forces Base – Esquimalt Wardroom on Saturday, November 15 at 12:00 Noon.

In lieu of flowers, donations will be accepted by Disabled Sailing Association Victoria; 4135 Lambrick Way; Victoria BC, V8N 5R3.
