January 31, 1936-June 15, 2015

It is with deep sadness that I announce Horst’s sudden passing early morning of Monday June 15th.  He leaves behind his soul mate of 33 years, Patricia Fehr, his son Dirk Albrecht of Munich, Germany, his many friends from many walks of life and his little 4 legged bed partner Zsa Zsa. Horst loved and succeeded at so many activities and hobbies: hunting, fishing, Ducks Unlimited fundraiser, Culinary Chef’s Canada fundraiser, Gun Club, Australian Wine Society President for 14 yrs, made his own superb wines for 25 years, Gourmet chef extraordinaire. Yet, one of Horst’s simple pleasures was a treat of herring and schnapps. When planning the annual hunting trip, it was always a culinary event for the boys, even in the bush, with all the fine china, trimmings & most of Pat’s kitchen. Horst loved to dance, and as a teenager having been born in Germany, he worked the shipyard docks off loading bananas at 4AM before cycling to school, to earn enough money to buy his first suit for Dancing School. Horst achieved master Sommelier and Gastronomique certificates from French, German & American & Australian Food and Wine Academies. His Hotelier degree was earned in Europe. Horst then brought his expertise to Canada in 1957 for his life long career as Manager of Private Businessmen’s Clubs for 26 yrs. in Vancouver then to Victoria’s Union Club in 1986. After retirement from the Club business in 1994, he acquired his Property Management License, which he practiced for about 10yrs until his full time retirement.  Horst loved to read history, especially WWII history.  He had strong opinions on many matters and loved a really good debate.  We enjoyed the winters away in Hawaii and those 1000 plus sunsets at cocktail hour. Horst always did things in a big way but he definitely “lived his life his way” He shall be truly be missed by many.

In lieu of flowers, please make a donation to a charity of your choice. A “Celebration of Life” will take place at McCall’s Funeral Home, Saturday June 27, 2015 at 3pm.

    Dear Pat,
I never met Horst, but I did learn a bit about his history from our mutual friend and from reading the obituary. My thoughts are with you at this time. It has been quite a shock, but you are a strong woman and happy times and memories will prevail. A big hug to you.

    Dr. Ms. Fehr:
Please accept my heartfelt condolences with respect to the recent passing of Horst.
I consider myself privileged to have known Horst. He was certainly a “Larger Then Life Individual”! I always looked forward to seeing him at the Union Club. We seemed to enjoy many of the same interests in life; hunting, fishing, and we shared our love of our Toyota Land Cruisers! I can still see Horst bouncing down the road, sometimes a cigar in his mouth, sitting “High in the Saddle” of his beloved Land Cruiser!

Horst stars in many wonderful memories of Australian Wine Society events and fundraisers for the Canadian Culinary Olympic Team and the Maritime Museum. His energy and enthusiasm for life and the causes he embraced carried us all along to success. Truly a friend to be remembered and missed.
