1934 – 2015

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Harold Ronald “Ron” Schilds on Thursday, September 3rd at the age of 81 with friend Daphne Mcgoldrick by his side.

Ron was born August 23,1934 in Dawson Creek. He was the oldest of eleven children born to Anne and Harold Schilds.  Ron tried a few jobs after high school and then left Dawson Creek to a career of 35 years with the Canadian Airforce. During his posting to Rivers, he met Betty Gamble of Carberry, MB.  Ron and Betty married and had three children, daughter, Valerie and two sons, Steven and Gary.  Ron played minor hockey in the 40’s with his two brothers, Doug and Fran and he continued his love of sport by joining the military enlisting as a physical education instructor.

Ron was a wonderful husband, father, grandfather and great grandfather. Ron met Betty when he was lifeguarding at the pool in Rivers and this was the beginning of his adventure in the military of moving every couple years. Ron was an avid sports lover.  In his military days, it was hockey, running or walking the trails in Germany or lunch hour time playing squash. Ron could easily be coached to referee football which he did in Moose Jaw. In Lahr, you could hear him on the radio as a radio broadcaster for many a hockey game. Ron and Betty and children travelled to many a base in Canada and there were two postings to Germany. One of his favorite postings was to Moose Jaw where he trained to fly Snowbirds. Ron always kept up with his favorite sports teams  and many a weekend you could find Ron watching football, hockey and golf. Ron loved to play bridge or play crib with friends. Ron loved to dance and spend time with friends. He also loved to sing and joined a number of choirs.

Ron will be lovingly remembered by his daughter, Valerie (Mike) Schilds; two sons, Steven (Marlene) and Gary (Amy) Schilds and grandchildren, Channa, Katrina (Ryan) and Jackie and great-grandchildren, Elyssa, Tristan and Carsen; step-grandchildren, Brenden, Korrie, Jordon and Sean, Jakob and Quinlan and Maya; brothers, Doug Schilds, Fran Schilds, Barrie (Lorraine) Schilds, Bill (Pat) Schilds, and Ted (Rosinne) Schilds; sisters, Norma Leffingwell, Barb Maguire, Betty Ferguson, Patricia (Jim) Inkster and many nieces and nephews.  Ron was predeceased by his mother, Anne Schilds; father, Harold Schilds; brother, Lawrence Schilds and grandson, Daniel Jedele. Ron will be missed by the many friends he touched with his love of life.

In honoring Ron’s wishes, no funeral service will be held. Inurnment to follow in the Dawson Creek City Cemetery.

For friends so wishing, donations may be made in memory of Ron to a charity of your own choice.

Val phoned me last month with the news & manner of Ron’s passing. 10 years older than I am and looking & acting 10 years younger, I expected & looked forward to Ron being around for many more years. With normal healthy living, he surely would have been. Our friendship & some financial guidance under banker-wife Betty’s astute awareness started in Lahr, Germany in 1974. We had MANY good times & visits together especially with mutual friend Bessie-Marie Hill.

These memories will never fade , and our warmth towards Ron & Betty’s children & grandchildren who were parts of our lives. So too were Betty’s parents & her brother, June Wells & I are embellished by all these decades of contacts.
