George Simpson

George Simpson

Born July 1, 1926 at home in Winnipeg, Manitoba, George died peacefully at home in Saanichton, BC on March 9, 2010, after a brief fight with lung cancer. Predeceased by his daughter, Donna, George leaves Marion, his wife of 59 years, their children, David (Sandi), Carol (Dave), Chris, son-in-law Ed and ten grandchildren. In the mid 1960’s George and Marion moved their young family from Winnipeg to Victoria, where he was a partner in Victoria Book and Stationery until his retirement in the early 1980’s. Becoming snowbirds, George and Marion travelled south each winter in their RV, returning in the springtime to their home at Sidney. In the mid 1990’s they moved to Arbutus Ridge where George refined his golf game. George’s good natured sense of humour will be remembered by all. His grandchildren recently shared their photos, writing and art work with him, bringing him great pleasure in his last days. George asked that there be no service and flowers are gratefully declined. Marion and the family thank you for thinking of George if you wish to donate to the BC Cancer Agency. Thank you to Dr. D. Bell, the VIHA community health nurses, Beacon homecare workers, the palliative care team and Glendora for their kindness.

    George,
I have only known you for a short time but it is a real treasure to have had the opportunity to get to know you- you were so kind and welcoming; your humour always made me smile and you had a wonderful way of sharing your stories. You are so loved by everyone in your life and I have come to love you too. I will miss you.

    Marian,
I admire you so much – your love for George was so apparent in the amazing care you gave him. I am deeply sorry for your loss. I hope you will find peace and joy in the memories you have of your life with George. Thank you for allowing me to be a part of his last days.

Chris, David, Carol & Sandy & Ed,
You did great work in the care you gave to your Dad and Mom – I saw such a depth of love and compassion in how you helped them through this time. I am deeply sorry for your loss as well and wish for you peace and joy in the memories you have of your Dad.

    To George’s Grandchildren,
Your beautiful pictures and notes to your Grandpa showed how much love you all had for him and he for you. You have precious memories and stories (and card games) to remember and tell – these will keep your Grandpa’s memory alive for you.

My condolence to you Marion,David,Carol and Chris. I am saddend by your loss. His loss has brought back a lot of great memories of my time at Vic Book. Over those years George became more of a friend rather than and employer. I will always remember him for letting me drive “The Red Mustang” especially in the summers with top down….always took a slight detour to Willows Beach….lol

    Dear Marion and Family,
We are sorry to learn of George’s passing. I look back to the old Vic Book Days with fond memories. George played such an important role in making the company a success. But more important was his common sense ,and encoureagement to each of us. I can still the twinkle in his eye and pipe in in thoughtful repose.
It was a privilege to have worked with George.
    Sincerely,
    Don

I’m sorry we didn’t get to know George better during his short time here. Since we were both ex-Winnipegers, we might have had a lot to talk about. If there is anything Audrey and I can do for you, please let us know.
