June 8, 1946-May 2, 2015

Eva was born in Bielefeld, Germany on June 8, 1946 and at the age of 6 yrs emigrated with her family to Canada where they settled in Toronto. In her youth Eva loved sport, playing tennis and basketball. Music was also a source of enjoyment for Eva and she played accordion and bass. Eva attended the University of Toronto and was the only woman in her graduating class of Chemical Engineers in July 1970. Securing employment as a female engineer presented challenges that she overcame. Eva worked in IT, where her analytical and technical skills were respected by her colleagues and valued by the company where she spent the majority of her working life. Friends often described Eva as an introvert but there was an extrovert in there just waiting to pop out. Eva could be feisty and had a wry sense of humour. She loved to cook. In the kitchen, Eva referred to her efforts as “bucket chemistry” and wouldn’t hesitate to try out an unproven meal on guests. However, a word of caution to those trying to reproduce that meal, she didn’t follow the recipe! Eva loved gadgets and all things technical. She was the go-to person for friends and family needing assistance to program devices and to stop the electronics from flashing the blue 1200. With her blonde hair and bright blue eyes, Eva was good fun, a kind, caring and generous person. Her spirit will be carried in the hearts of those who knew and loved her. We will miss this warm and gentle soul. Eva died peacefully in Hospice on May 2, 2015. She leaves to mourn her best friend and partner of 40 years, Ann and son, Eric. Predeceased by her parents, Eva is survived by her brother, Jurgen (Lorraine); sister, Angelika (Ian); sister-in-law Susan (Roger) and many loved nieces, nephews and their children. Thanks are given to staff at the BC Cancer Clinic at RJH. Special thanks extended to Dr. D. Fenton and Dr. U. Belgaumkar.

There will be no service at Eva’s request.  Those wishing to make a donation in Eva’s name are kindly asked to consider the BCCA/BCCF or Hospice at RJH. Condolences may be offered to the family below.

I realize this is 6+ years after Eva’s passing. I was thinking about Eva last night as she came to mind as the best supervisor I ever had at Dow. She’s the one that very early in my career told me that I should consider being a supervisor later at work as well. At that young age (late 20’s) I didn’t think I had that in me. I was that introvert Belgian guy that was happy doing technical work. She made me think about it though, and also supported me along the way. Eventually she was right … of course. If she would have known, it would have brought that typical smile on her face. How I loved working for that lady.

When I decided to look Eva up on the internet I came across this obituary. Makes me sad, but I am glad she went peacefully.

Eva, without realizing it, you have a special place in many people’s hearts.

Ann, I am so sorry to hear of Eva’s passing. I have been searching the internet for her for the last couple of years and finally found this notice to-day. I have many fond memories of Eva. We kept in touch from 1959 till about 1987 and then lost track.

Dear Ann, I was sorry to read of Eva’s passing in the Dow retiree newsletter. She was a great cook and it was so fun spending time with the two of you. I still laugh about the bag of sugar that was rarely used and I used to tell her I could go through one in a week with all my baking! I wish you the best going forward.
    My condolences,
    Mindy

First of all Jim and I were shocked to hear of Eva’s passing. She was a soul to behold. Ann – you and Eva made us laugh on many occasions, and Eva’s rye sense of humor was our love of her. Your writing has brought a tear to our eyes and we will never forget this spirit to behold. We just wish we had spent more time together.

    Best

    Deedrie and Jim xoxo
