February 18, 1930 – February 16, 2014

Eugen passed away peacefully, at the age of 83, at his home in Victoria, following a lengthy illness.  He was lovingly cared for by his family.  Eugen is survived by his beloved wife, Magdalena Fitterer (nee Elder), of 59 years; children, Maria(Graydon), Greg (Julia), Larry (Sarah), Tony (Christine), and Tom; 16 grandchildren, and 10 great grandchildren.

Eugen and Magdalena met and married in Kelowna in 1954 and moved to Victoria soon after where they raised their 5 children.  He was a welder/steel fabricator by trade and had worked as a pipe-liner and later with the Boilermakers Union. Eugen valued his Catholic Faith and family life. He enjoyed travelling and keeping in contact with his extended family and friends.  He loved to spend time boating, star-gazing and beachcombing at Cowichan Lake and made fond memories there with family and friends.

Eugen had a wonderful sense of humor and was a great story-teller. He was a unique human being and touched the hearts of those who knew him.  He will truly be missed.

Special thanks to Victoria Hospice, B.C. Cancer Agency, and Beacon and Bayshore staff for their compassionate care.

A Prayer Service and visitation will be held at McCall’s Floral Chapel, Johnson at Vancouver St., on Friday, February 28, 2014, at 7:00 pm.  A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at St. Andrew’s Cathedral on Saturday, March 1, 2014, at 12:00 pm.  A reception will follow in the McCall’s Family Centre.  Interment will take place at the Royal Oak Burial Park at 3:00 pm.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Victoria Hospice & Palliative Care Foundation at www.victoriahospice.org, or to the charity of your choice.

  • Jennifer Dreaver

My sincere condolences for the passing of my great uncle Eugen. All my love and sympathies go out to Aunt Lena and family.

I remember visiting B.C on our family trips from Toronto. I cherish time spent with uncle at the house on Cowichan Lake. A wonderful human being and someone I looked towards as a connection to my late grandfather, Peter Fitterer.

    Love always,
    Jennifer

  • Paul Fitterer, & Alani Caruso-Fitterer

    Dear Onkel Eugen:

    You will be missed.

Your generosity, loyalty, humour, large “Bauern” hands, and kind eyes, will be fondly remembered.

Agreeing to disagree in debate was quite often the case for us. (although we never disassociated our love)

A dear uncle (younger brother to my father Peter) who supported us while we grieved the loss of our Dad’s passing. (1977)
A close friend to my mother. (Irene)
A lover of nature, and children. (tubing on the lake)
A spiritual practitioner, and champion for the family.

Always welcomed at home by you, Lena, Maria, Graydon, Tom, Greg, and everyone in your large immediate family!

    Many, many stories.

    Love you all ways.

    Paul & Alani

Bruce and I have been so blessed to have had all the wonderful hours in the recent past to spend with Eugene and Lena. Even though Bruce was a second cousin he always considered Eugene as a beloved uncle. You will be missed “James Bond”. Our love goes out to all of the family.

  • Dean Marchtaler

Our deepest sympathy to all the family. I thank Eugen
for explaining some of my family history, as I was told he was the only one that could read old German. I now have the opportunity to learn more of my history and for this I am very grateful.
    God bless you all.

Our sympathies to Lena and all family members. We always enjoyed chatting with him. His stories were told with just the right amount of humor. It was him that got me interested in stargazing. Thinking of him always brings a smile.
