Elspeth passed away peacefully early on January 25, 2015 with her sister by her side.  She will be greatly missed by her sister, Katrine Howe and family and friends.  Elspeth was born in Toronto on October 21, 1916.  She was a long time and active member of both the Presbyterian Church and I.O.D.E.  Family and friends were always very important to her.  She loved her 68 summers spent at Kenewallyn on Manitoulin Island.

A Committal Service will be held in Ontario in late Spring.  In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to your local hospice or charity of your choice.

Condolences may be offered to the family below.

    Dear Katrine,
My husband, Elmer, and I will always hold dear the memory of dinner with you, Elspeth and 3 other cousins, at your cottage on Manitoulin Island. We were celebrating our common ancestor, James McKenzie, who came with several of his children, from Scotland to Uxbridge, Ontario in 1842. It was the first time we had ever been together. Quite a memory.

    Dear Katrine,

In Loving Memory Of Your Sister Elspeth – It seems fitting that Elspeth slipped away on January 25th, Robbie Burns’ birthday, loyal to her Scottish roots till the very end.

Our family fondly remember the wonderful times we shared with you and your sister Elspeth over the almost 50 years since my late husband Dave first became your young lawyer. We enjoyed wonderful summers on Manitoulin Island in Ontario and enjoyed your visit west when we moved to Nanaimo. You were the best house guests, entering into all the activities with enthusiasm. We enjoyed a boat tour on the Lady Rose to Barkley Sound, a show at Chemainus theatre, an at home Crab Fest when Dave caught and shelled the crabs, picnics at the beach, and just sitting on our deck enjoying the ambiance of ocean view and wild life. The two of you entered into all activities with such enthusiasm, you made our time together so pleasurable. Katrine you and Elspeth have been wonderful and true friends to us throughout those many years and we were so delighted when you also chose to move West.

In the years I have known Elspeth, she appeared to live and enjoy each moment to the fullest and her focus was amazing, whether visiting with a friend, playing a bridge game, or in her last year tossing and catching a beach ball with precision. She put we younger folk to shame. At one Christmas dinner, Catherine gave us each a whistle with one note to play and acted as the leader calling out our number, and it was Elspeth who kept the notes with great focus (amid much laughter) and amazingly, we were able to recognize the tunes and had great fun together.

My family and I have been truly blessed knowing Elspeth and yourself over the many years and though Elspeth has departed this life, we have so many wonderful memories of our special times together and it is comforting to know she is finally at peace and in God’s loving care. Elspeth’s long life was well lived and she was greatly loved by many who valued her friendship. We hold you too Katrine in our love and prayers.

    Love,

    Jean

    Dear Katrine,

I’m so sorry to hear about Elspeth’s passing. I remember fondly the times our family had together at your place in Stouffville and our chats on our porch in Innisfil. It was always wonderful to hear her perspective on life, in combination with yours! Between the two of you, you had us in stitches. Together, you and Elspeth bring much razing poking fun and laughter, we ALWAYS enjoyed your company. Elspeth will be missed dearly by family and friends. It is wonderful to know that she died peacefully in her sleep and that she had great care to help her through these last few months. She was so lucky to have you close by throughout her life. Although she is going to be dearly missed, she will be fondly remembered in our hearts for many years to come.

    All our love,

    Shelley, Brian, Megan and Matthew

I was so sorry to see the notice in today’s paper, Katrine. You and Elspeth were such bright lights at Douglas House; the two of you with Elizabeth and Mum shared so much laughter and joy while she was a resident there. I remember sitting having coffee with her in the common room; you and Elspeth would arrive and the whole room would light up. And your visits to her at Parkwood made her happiest days there. I hope to see you soon.

    Love
    Carolyn
