Eileen Mary Hitchman (nee Barter), born on June 26, 1925, went home to be with her Lord on Sunday, May 3, 2015.

She was ‘Daughter’ to Frank and Eileen (Dartnell) Barter, ‘Sister’ to Frank Jr. and Eddie and ‘Wife’ to her loving husband Stanley.

She was ‘Mom’ to Nancy (Norm), Vicki (Phil) and Brent (Patti), ‘Nana’ to Ryan, Kaleigh, Jason, Lauren, Sara and Reid, ‘Great-Nana’ to Ezekiel, Tegan, Elisha and Liam, and a loyal friend, aunt, cousin and neighbor to too many to count.

She was born, raised, and lived in the Kitsilano area of Vancouver until the young, handsome Stan Hitchman swept her off her feet and took her to the island paradise of Victoria. Married June 12, 1948, Eileen embraced her calling as a wife and mother.

If she wasn’t in the house keeping it clean and tidy with something baking in the kitchen, she was out in the yard tending to some of the most beautiful gardens in the city. She also played the piano and knit (her signature piece being baby sweaters with ‘ducky buttons’).  She served along with her husband Stan on the Board of Wiseways Preschool at Lambrick Park Church for over 20 years.

A dear family friend described her as a beautiful, elegant lady, with a gracious warm spirit. That says it well.

We will miss her dearly, but know that her physical struggles are now over – and she is free and healed in the Presence of her Lord and Saviour, Jesus Christ.

There will be a graveside service at Royal Oak Burial Park, 4673 Falaise Drive, Victoria B.C. on Tuesday, May 19th at 1:00 p.m. open to everyone. A sharing of memories with refreshments will follow at 2:00pm at Friendship Community Church, 7820 Central Saanich Road, Central Saanich B.C.

In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to Christian Blind Mission (www.cbmcanada.org).  Condolences may be offered to the family below.

Dear Stan..was looking online for info and saw the notice of Eileen’s home going and wanted to send my sympathy and love. Am thinking of the long trip we took to Chgo. many years ago and how gracious Eileen was during those days with all of us in a small car. May our Lord be close and comfort you and family in the months to come. Love, Edie

  • Darlene Ricketts (Norris)

Our sincere condolences to the Hitchman family. Our family grew up around the corner in Fairfield and Vicky was a dear friend at that time. Every Sunday the Hitchman family would go to church and would invite my sister and I to go along, can’t tell you how much of a wonderful influence that had on us. By the grace of God many years later I had the opportunity to meet Mr. And Mrs. Hitchman at Lambrick Park Church as our own children attended Wiseways. Thank you so much for opening our lives to happy memories and new beginnings. Mrs. Hitchman was a kind caring woman may she live happily with the Lord.

I was so very sorry to hear of Mrs. Hitchman’s passing – I attended Victoria Gospel Hall as a child, which is where I first knew her, and then for several years at Lambrick. Never a lovelier lady walked this earth. Heaven is a wee bit happier place, now that she has gone on to there. My sincerest condolences to all of her family and friends.

Uncle Stan, Nancy, Vicki, Brent and families…Philip and I are saddened to know of Auntie Eileen’s passing yet rejoice she is with our Lord and Saviour. Great memories…from Neil Street duplex days to our visit at the cottage a couple of summers ago. Just two weeks ago I shared with a friend how she rescued our escaped budgie Tinkerbell (with your help, Nancy). I’ll always remember her smile and expressive eyes. Wish I were closer to be with you and give you a hug. Keeping you in our thoughts and prayers. With love…Mardee (& Phil)
