January 11, 1930 – April 23, 2014

It is with deep sadness, we announce the passing of our precious father, grandfather and great-grandfather.  Predeceased by the “love of his life”, wife, Norah in January 2007.  Survived by son, Michael Hardy (Penny), daughter, Joanne Clarke; grandchildren, Chelsea (Mike), Norah (Dallas), Evan, Eamonn (Leah) and Jordan; great-grandchildren, Jared, Maya, Charlotte, and Cohen, as well as many nephews, nieces and friends.

Retiring after over 30 years in 1987 from the Victoria City Police Department as Inspector, Ed enjoyed many years boating with Norah through Capital City Yacht Club, where he served a term as Commadore and several other positions.  Ed will be remembered fondly by all that knew him, for his devotion and humor.  The family would like to thank Dr. Dan Buie and all the wonderful staff at Sunset Lodge for their compassionate care.

Celebration of life will be held at McCall’s Downtown, Johnson & Vancouver Streets, at 1:00 pm on Monday, May 26, 2014 with a reception to follow in the McCall’s Family Centre.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the BC Cancer Foundation, 2410 Lee Ave., Victoria, BC V8R 6V5.

“WORDS CANNOT DESCRIBE HOW MUCH YOU WILL BE MISSED, DAD, BUT WE HAVE COMFORT KNOWING YOU ARE NOW AT PEACE IN MOM’S ARMS.”

Ed was a credit to the profession and a guy who never forgot a friend

Our thoughts and prayers go out to you Mike and Penny and the rest of the family during this time. I have good memories of your Dad, starting at those soccer games when we played together, and then for ten years as our careers crossed with the Victoria Police Department. Your Dad always had time to stop and chat, always keeping me updated on how well you were doing. He was always there to offer policing advise to me when needed. I was blessed to have known him both on a personal level as well as a professional level. Stay strong.

  • Derek Chow

My condolences to Ed’s family. I will always be remembered him as devoted member of the VCP who was a mentor to many during his years as a S/Sgt. and Inspector.

  • Terry Forsyth

Ed’s friends at Capital City Yacht Club offer our sympathy to you at this sad time.

  • Randy Vincent

Saddened to hear of your dad’s passing. Although I only knew him when I was a kid, you could tell that he was one of the genuine good guys.

  • Val & Don Gill

Ed was seated at the next table over from my husband, Don, at Sunset Lodge and I was always impressed by what a kind, thoughtful, gentleman he always was; it was my pleasure to help him with his clothing protecter when I was having lunch with my husband each Sunday at the Lodge. Ed was always most grateful and is certainly missed by Don and I and his many friends at staff at Sunset; our sincere condolences to the whole Hardy family.

I feel so badly for your loss. S/Sgt Hardy was a boss of mine for many years and he always showed such kindness and the best smile on earth.
I was truly fond of him, and as a civilian, could not have been treated better.
All my thoughts to you and yours.

  • Dale Saunderson

Judy and I send our condolences to the Hardy family. I worked for Ed when I was in traffic in the 80’s. He was the best Inspector. He made you feel like you were a member of a team. It was always a pleasure to work when he was around. He will be missed.

Hi Mike and Penny, firstly, my condolences on your father’s passing. His image jumped off the page of the TC this morning. I never got the chance to let you know what an outstanding team mate you were, Mike. Those things don’t happen by chance. The apple did not fall far from the tree. Your father had a son that he could be justifiably proud of. I know what it’s like to lose your father and I simply wanted you to know that I was thinking of you and glad to see that you and Penny were together after all these years. I am sorry I won’t be able to attend the service but I did want you to know that I was thinking about you. Jim de Goede

I am so sorry for your loss. Ed was my first Sgt and later S/Sgt at the Victoria police Dept. He was a marvellous leader, mentor, friend and guide to me . I was so lucky to spend a little time with him at the Sunset lodge recently when the police chorus performed for the residents. A true precious moment .He will be sorely missed but always remembered. He was truly one of the greats.
