Eric Ricker Dear Bob and Lynda,
I just recently learned of your loss. I never met Doug but spent some time reading through the many tributes paid to him by his friends and patients to gain a sense of who he was. Not surprisingly, the tributes all reminded me of his parents in school days long ago — the characteristic gentleness, basketball prowess, you name it.
It’s a small comfort, I realize, but the comments recorded here are very much a tribute to you as parents as well as to your son.
Eric and Carolyn

Chris Mosher Dr. and Mrs. Malpass and family – my sincerest condolences. As you all know, Doug and I grew up playing BBall together and although neither of us had played in many, many years, one of my last texts to Doug was reminiscing about the biggest coaching screw-up we had – it made us both laugh. Doug and I had a lot of fun and shared a lot of laughs over the years. He was a great person and will be missed!!

Rob Jones and the Jones's When I received a very touching letter explaining that Dr. Malpass was leaving his practice. It took me at a big shock. I had some very difficult dental work done by him as a result of a hockey injury. Doug took the time to explain the procedure and he explained the best case scenario. I really appreciated his honesty, work ethic, humor, intelligence and his patience. I never felt like a number or just a name. When my daughter was born, I explained how he will have to make room for a new patient…. he laughed a said ” she has to have teeth first”. Taken too soon. My sincere condolences to all of his family and friends.
-

Sally and Simon Muir We are so sorry for your loss. It was such a kind gentleman and a fine man. I hope he is at peace. You poor things, what sadness for you.
“Let us weep in our darkness, but weep not for him!
Not for him who, departing, leaves millions in tears!
Not for him who has died full of honor and years!
Not for him who ascended Fame’s ladder so high:
From the round at the top he has stepped to the sky.”
―Nathaniel Parker Willis

Tom Vogler I am saddened to hear of Doug’s passing. I saw a mutual friend not long ago and he regaled me with stories of Thailand and Doug’s epic trip through the Alps in a rented Ferrari and I had to smile. From Uplands Elementary, to Lansdowne, to Mt Douglas High School, Doug was a good friend to all who knew him. He always made me laugh and sometimes challenged me to be better at some parts of my life. He was a good dentist to my family and a thoughtful man. The world has lost a priceless person who belies the following by Isiah Thomas: “If all I’m remembered for is being a good basketball player, then I’ve done a bad job with the rest of my life.” In Doug’s case he was a great basketball player who will be remembered for so many other noble things. Sending Doug’s family good energy and thoughts at this difficult time. Be well Doug.
-
Jay & Nancy Cornell As a classmate of Doug I think I can speak for the entire class of 1990 when I say he will be missed.
Rarely did you see Doug without a smile on his face and he was always quick witted. Many of my memories of Doug bring a smile to my face as I think back on some of the things as a class that we got up to.
Our sincerest condolences to his family and loved ones for his loss .
-
Dr. Brian Draper Life is not fair! I am 20 years older than Doug and still around. Why do we lose such a great guy so young? I am an oral surgeon and Doug has referred patients to me for many years. Over all that time, I have never seen a patient from his office that didn’t have good things to say about him. He was a fine dentist and truly a gentleman. He loved his life–his golf, his dogs and, of course, good red wine (as well, of course, the tables at Vegas).
Doug will be truly missed! My special condolences to his wife, to Bob and Linda and the rest of the family!Dr. Brian Draper

-
Ann Ishiguro My daughters and I were Doug’s patients from the time his father retired. We so appreciated his gentle skilfulness and quiet friendliness. He actually made going to the dentist something I looked forward to! And at least as importantly, he is responsible for convincing me that two dogs are always better than one. I am pleased to say he was correct. My sincere condolences to his family and friends.
-
John Billett I retired to Victoria in 2003….and found one of the finest dentists I have ever known. Dr. Malpass was not only kind and cordial, but was very competent as a general dentist. His work, especially crown and bridge, was second to none. As a retired dentist of 30 years, I appreciated his technical expertise and realized how difficult it must be for him to work for a dentist patient ….I am not sure which one of us was the most nervous during treatment!
I extend my deepest condolences to this fine man’s family.
John Billett B.S.A., D.M.D.

Nancy Pickell I was a patient of Dr. Malpass for many, many years – since he took over the practice on Cloverdale Avenue. He was a very caring and compassionate dentist. I will miss his kind and cheerful hello when he would greet me at an appointment. My sincere condolences to all of his family and friends.
I knew he was ill but only just learned of Dr. Malpass’s passing. I was such an anxious patient and Dr. Malpass was so kind and understanding. He made me feel so comfortable and always seemed genuinely interested in what I had to say. He was taken from this earth far too soon and he will be dearly missed. My deepest condolences to his family and friends. May your happy memories of him bring you comfort and keep him close to your hearts.
In sympathy,
