November 12, 1936 – February 2, 2014

Don’s family are deeply saddened to announce his passing at the age of 77 in Victoria BC. He leaves to mourn his wife and best friend of 55 years, Judy (Judith Rettie) and 3 children: Laurie (Jerry Thompson), Bonnie (Shaun Lorhan), Bruce (Susan Perkins), granddaughters Julia and Christina McAskill, as well as step-grandson Aaron Lorhan and step-granddaughter Kylie Robb, her husband Jay and their daughters Sadie and Libby. He also leaves to mourn, his sister Sherrill Semko (Peter), cousins Mary Glauser, Marilyn Moule, Margie MacAskill and many more cousins, nieces and nephews.

Don was born in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan to John and Lola McAskill. He attended Caswell School and Bedford Road Collegiate. Don received both a B.Ed. and B.A. from the University of Saskatchewan.

Don worked for the Saskatoon Public School Division for 31 years as a teacher, vice principal and principal. Judy and Don retired in 1993 and spent summers at the lake cabin gardening and boating and wintered in Florida for 8 years. They have lived in Victoria for the last 10 years to be close to their grandchildren.

Don loved all animals and little children and was always kind and gentle yet firm with them. He was an avid basketball and football fan. Don loved the outdoors and he enjoyed fishing, horseback riding, baling hay, skiing and golfing. He was a handy man, a great wine maker and he loved making cookies.

THROUGH EVERYTHING HE WAS WHAT THE OLD SCHOOL WOULD CALL A REAL GENTLEMAN.

With all our love, from the family. A service of remembrance will be held at McCall’s Funeral Chapel, Johnson & Vancouver Streets, Victoria, B.C. on Thursday, February 6, 2014 at 2:00 pm.  Condolences may be offered to the family below.
